HDMI 5x1 5 Port Switch/Switcher with IR Remote Support 3D Review

HDMI 5x1 5 Port Switch/Switcher with IR Remote Support 3D
Average Reviews:

I just installed this switch in order to be able to use one HDMI input on my receiver for both a PS3 and an XBox 360. It worked perfectly, first time. It comes with an AC/DC adapter and a remote, but please note that those are optional-- you only need power if you want to use the remote, as the switch draws power from the HDMI system, so it works just fine as a passive switch (even lighting up the LEDs appropriately to show which device is selected) if you only want to use the on-board "Select" button. Even though I don't use the added items, this 5-input device has turned out to be a great device for a great price.
One other note: HDMI cables are pretty new on the scene. I'm using the really cheap ones (which work just as well as the really expensive ones-- it's digital, people, not analog!), and they fit just fine. I suspect that complaints about cable size and like issues will go away with devices like this one, which is in the mainstream of HDMI specs.
UPDATE - April 2011 - After six months, the switch is still working great. I also want to report that we never have to use the Select button, because the automatic switching works seamlessly. That is, when the PS3 is off and the XBox is on, the switch automatically selects the XBox. Turn off the XBox and turn on the PS3, and the switch, um, switches. No fiddling required. My sons don't even know it's there.

Directv Rc64r Ir/rf Satellite Remote Control Review

Directv Rc64r Ir/rf Satellite Remote Control
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm no techno-geek, so I'll try and explain this in non-technical terms, in case anybody is interested.
This is your standard Direct TV remote, except this version has both IR and RF capabilities. In certain instances, you may need IR (Infrared) and RF (Radio Frequency) remotes. My situation was that I have a Direct TV HD-DVR (HR24-200) and a Standard HD receiver (H21-200) in the same room- one top of the other, actually- and using one remote for one device (like for changing the channels) would change the channel on the other device.
I, of course, didn't realize this when the Direct TV technician came in and set up this all up, and since the wife and I have our own remotes, the bottom line was I needed an RF capable remote for me, so that I could operate each device separately also.
This remote did the trick...however one big thing to realize: The remote I received was already in IR mode. I thought it was broken, but through a little digging on the Direct TV technical site, I found how you can change the remote to "RF" mode. Here are the steps:
1. make sure "slider" on top is set to dtv.
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT, wait for two blinks, release
3. enter 0 0 0 0 1
4. press and hold MUTE & SELECT, wait for two blinks, release
5. enter 9 6 1
6. press CH UP
7. enter the last 6 digits of the Receiver ID# (RID), found on a sticker in the access card compartment
8. press SELECT
The remote came with absolutely NO directions, and I almost rated it 4 stars as a result. Outside of that annoying little omission, it works fine. Hopefully it'll last, too.
Good luck!

Re iPhone Universal Remote Control - Infrared Remote Control Accessory for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch Review

Re iPhone Universal Remote Control - Infrared Remote Control Accessory for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was a guy looking for a GREAT universal remote. I've used ALL of the available products (4) and this one is the BEST available. By far.
Here's why:
First of all, it's one of just two that have a built-in database of thousands of brands. That means typically you don't need to learn any buttons (but you can). It also means FAST setup and use. And it also means true PORTABILITY. Set up any device anywhere, anytime.
So my advise is to stay away from the learning-only remotes. They are slow to use and VERY cumbersome. There are some that say that they can download the codes, but 'User Contributed Codes' can have lots of different problems.
I found this product to have the most powerful IR transmission. You need this. Some products use smaller IR Diodes, some limit the current to the IR diode.
But the real strength of this product is the feature rich, but free APP. It has Macros and Favorite Lists (including network logos). It is truly programmable in button images and layouts. But the killer feature is the Activity Remotes. This is the capability that is usually found only in remotes costing hundreds of dollars. The activity remote is where you will spend your time using this product.
Its the Activity Remotes that make this product worth the money and stand out above all others.
Sorry for the long post, but I found an iPhone remote control that I really like, and even my wife like to use.

Grace Digital GDI-IR1000 Wi-Fi Internet Radio Featuring Pandora and NPR On-Demand Review

Grace Digital GDI-IR1000 Wi-Fi Internet Radio Featuring Pandora and NPR On-Demand
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
UPDATE: I was so happy with my first IR2000 I purchaced another one for home.
This is a great radio. I've owned it for nearly a week now and it's worked flawlessly. I was looking for a radio for my desk at work and I couldn't have made a better choice. Over the past few weeks I read every review I could find about every internet radio on the market. I finally decided on this one. I really love it. The sound is great but don't expect to be using it on full volume to cover your entire house. Here is my list of likes and dislikes and I hope it helps.
Like's:
-The size was perfect for my desk
-It looks very stylish
-I fired up the radio and had it working within minutes without reading the manual
-It was very easy to register at [...] and automatically download my radio stations and streams.
-I added some personal streams and they appeared on the screen of the radio within minutes.
-It was very easy to browse stations around the world without the use of my [...] account.
-The Audio sounded really good. Especially for the size of the radio
-WIFI setup was very simple. I moved it from one network to another and it remembered both password keys (WEP & WPA)
-The signal strength was really good especially with an internal antenna
-Navigation on the screen was very simple.
-When available it scrolled song or audio information across the screen. E.g. I tuned into aircraft traffic control after I added it to own streams after finding in on a website and within minutes weather information was scrolling across the screen.
-The remote is simple to use
-External input for an MP3 player, etc is a great addition
-It can stream audio from just about anywhere.....Radio Station Streams, Pandora, Sirius, Your PC, any MP3/REAL Audio/WMA stream off the net....
Dislike's:
-The headphone jack is on the back. I use my headphone a lot and it's a pain having to pull the radio forward each time I want to plug them in. The Aux (External) input should be on the back and the headphone input should be on the front.
-Although it's good that the radio is light, it tends to slide a little when I press the select button at times.
-I looked at the manual after I got everything working and it's laid out OK. They could lay it out just a little better.
Conclusion.
The radio is well worth the money. It's very easy to use and setup. The sound is great. The menus are easy to use. It's built well. In all it's a fantastic radio. If I were purchase another radio for my desk, beside my bed or on a table in the lounge room, I would buy another one of these for sure. In fact, I'm thinking about it right now. I give this one 5/5.

I got this as a cheap alternative to the Canon remote, and it works great. On my Canon 60D I change the drive mode to timer/remote, and point the remote at the front of the camera. It works! This remote also has a 2 second delay switch on the back of the remote, which works as advertised - press the remote button, the signal is sent to the camera (AF assist light blinks) then the shutter triggers after 2 seconds. Regardless of the shutter delay set by the camera, the remote will trigger the shutter immediately or after 2 seconds, depending on the remote's chosen mode. It takes a CR2025 3V lithium cell (conveniently included and pre-installed). As for range, indoors it works up to 24 feet away(tested by me) and it does not seem to be affected by ambient light levels, though I have not tried it in sunlight. One drawback is that it cannot wake the camera from power-saving or sleep mode (e.g. if it is powered on but has not been used for a few minutes), but this is not a flaw of the remote, just of the Canon system as a whole. For less than $5, can't be beat.

Dish Network 5.0/5.3/5.4 IR Infrared DVR TV1 Remote Control

Programming was a pain but it works. I wish all the tabs were included (see that green tab? google the remote - they refer to whether it is a IR or UHF or IR/UHF remote - I would have been better off with a IR/UHF this is an IR, green tab #1).
Under "system info" (menu button) you can find your remote "code", which is what you program the Sat button with. There is a way to reset it if you have absolutely no remote by resetting the DVR and turning it back on. This was hard for me to figure out (fyi, ours was "9"). Once you know what your code is, hold the SAT button down until all the buttons blink, enter the code, and press pound. Easy peezy.

Logitech Harmony RF Wireless Extender Review

Logitech Harmony RF Wireless Extender
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Logitech Harmony RF Wireless Extender allows your RF-equipped Harmony Remote (the 890, 895 or new 1000) to control components without having an IR "line of sight" to the components. One RF Wireless Extender is included with the Harmony 890, but it is unfortunately not included with the Harmony 1000.
Make no mistake, this device is an absolute REQUIREMENT for any large room or complex setup. In my configuration, the Harmony 1000 didn't have the strength to power all of my components through IR from 20 feet distance. The RF extender solved this problem, and now I can control my entire setup even from another room.
One RF Wireless Extender can control up to 8 components within the line of sight of the unit, or within line of sight of the 8 included IR emitters. You can add multiple extenders to your configuration if you have components in different rooms or areas that could not be served by one unit. Annoyingly, even if you have more than 8 components within the reach of the unit or the emitters the Harmony software won't let you assign more than 8 devices to a single extender.
IMPORTANT: You should try to setup and verify your Harmony configuration using IR-only if possible before adding the extender, even if you have to sit near your components or have cabinet doors open. This is because the Harmony software makes you connect and disconnect both the extender (which must be unplugged from AC power) and the remote each time you make a change. Setting up the Harmony first, by itself, with IR is much easier to make changes to the configuration.
After verifying I could control my components using IR-only, I added the RF Wireless Extender to my setup. The Harmony software updated to the latest firmware, and I have had no problems configuring it using both Mac OS X and Windows clients.
Setup is very easy. If all of your components are behind a cabinet, you can simply mount this "blaster" unit inside, at least 10 inches from the front of your components. Or, you can attach the 8 included wired emitters (in 4 pairs of 2) near the IR receivers of each component. The wires for each of the 4 pairs are roughly 7 feet long, splitting into 2 emitters that must be placed within 25 inches of each other. Also good to note is that the tape is strong enough to attach to your component, but not strong enough to leave any residue should you need to remove them.
Within the Harmony setup, you then assign each component to either IR or RF Extender control. Optionally, you can assign each component to a channel (A,B,C,D,blaster) which corresponds to the 4 sets of 2 wired emitters and base, or all channels which sends all commands to all emitters. I chose to specifically assign each component to its channel, which seems to give better performance. (TIP: label your emitter wires!)
Once configured, you connect the RF Extender and the Harmony Remote to your computer to download the configuration. Then, you must plug the RF Extender into the wall, and optionally attach the IR emitter wires. The Harmony remote must initially be "paired" with the RF Extender, which is done by pressing the "Connect" button on the extender, and following the prompts on your remote.
Operation was flawless. I could control all components from around my house! And, the performance of startup was much faster, I believe because I had assigned each component to a specific channel on the extender.
In my configuration, I was pleasantly surprised to find the RF extender is fast enough to send the repeated command sequences needed to accelerate up and down through the menus in my AppleTV. Great job, Logitech!
If there was one area where Logitech could make improvements it would be the supplied documentation, which attempts to be user friendly but in the process is so oversimplified it is of little use. Since Amazon doesn't allow half-star increments, I stand by my 5-star review, documentation withstanding.
Based on the large number of problems people had when this was first released a year ago, I was expecting issues, but it would appear that the latest firmware (RF Extender v2.4, Harmony 890 v4.7) and Harmony client software (v7.0.2) have resolved all issues for both Mac OS X and Windows users.
All in all, a highly recommended product - and a great value bundled with the matching Harmony 890 (see my review there). I have since upgraded to the Harmony 1000, but kept this extender to use with it. It's a shame that Logitech doesn't include the extender with the 1000, as it really is a requirement.
I would recommend this without hesitation.

Mediagate - Windows Vista Certified Media Center MCE Remote Control w/ 2 Channel IR Emitter and Infrared Receiver for Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows Vista Ultimate
Average Reviews:

Pros:
Works great with Media Center in Windows 7. All the shortcut buttons work as expected.
To enter a period ( '.' character) , the '*' button on the remote will work. So it's possible to enter channel 8.3 by pressing 8*3.
With a Gateway SX computer connected to our TV,an antenna and SiliconDust HD Homerun network tuners, we are now able to watch TV over the air in our living room, using Windows Media Center as a DVR. This remote makes the experience complete.
Comes with a manual that is on the most part helpful.
Cons:
Description on Amazon is incorrect. The description says that the remote can control the TV. The manual also says that the remote can learn TV power, Volume, mute and channel number commands from another remote. The instructions refer to a Green LED that indicates success. This remote only has a red LED. There is no green LED on this remote.
This was a disappointment not to be able to control TV volume with this remote.
No company name, address, website or copyright anywhere on the remote itself, on the box or on the manual.
The manual says the colored buttons at the bottom of the remote are for teletext. So they are totally useless.

TiVoSlide C00240 Keyboard Remote Control, Black Review

TiVoSlide C00240 Keyboard Remote Control, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a brilliant idea TiVO should have built long ago. This remote was connected to a TiVO HD with a TiVO wireless adapter already connected.
Installation couldn't be easier. Plug the Bluetooth receiver (supplied in the box) into one of the USB plugs in the back of your TiVO (if you like there is a USB 'extension cord' you can plug in and Velcro to the top of your TiVO), put in the two AA batteries in the remote. Guess what, that's it. No seriously, there is nothing else to do. NADA, nothing, it works right out of the box perfectly.
Oh, I did oversimplify things a tiny bit, if you want to control the power for your television, and volume / mute on your A/V receiver; you have to do that programming. But, you know, you've done that already with the regular TiVO remote, so there's nothing new there. Hey, you did write down your code numbers, right? The instruction booklet does remind you to go to the TiVO menu, settings, Remote Control, and then select the appropriate control.
The thing you really want to know about, that keyboard. In a word, it is excellent. I absolutely HATED arrowing around to select letters on season passes, searching YouTube, and even set up my remote control. With this remote, when you arrive at a menu that wants letters entered, couldn't be easier, slide the remote open, press the letter keys on the QWERTY keyboard and numbers on the number pad to the right. It works so fast I couldn't believe it.
So setting up my television codes (Samsung) and my A/V receiver codes (Yamaha) I had to arrow down for a week to get to the S's, and then worst with Y's. On this remote, slip it open and press S, and there I was Samsung. Press Y and there you are for Yamaha. So quick, so easy.
The remote does a pretty cool glow whenever the room is dark and you press a button. The glow is white / blue and subtle. I've gotten so used to button location that the light is almost not necessary.
Comment on the size - this remote is a little chunk of meat. Mr. Peanut gained some weight, and he got shorter. He's about twenty five percent shorter than the original remote. It is a bit thicker, maybe twenty five percent. To my hand, it feels really nice. Small hands might find it a bit bulky.
Key layout is just fine. In order to shrink this thing, they had to move some keys up a bit. Select is now in the center of the top dial (it was below before). Pause is now in the center of the bottom dial (it was below before). Volume and Channel are now switched with the thumbs up and down buttons. I'm sure I'll hit the wrong button in the beginning. Otherwise the layout is pretty similar. It won't take long to get used to the slightly changed layout and key feel. You almost have to not think about where you are putting your fingers, they pretty much go where they should.
The keyboard is very easy to use. Spacing of the letter keys is very nice. Anybody that has typed on a Blackberry will feel at home here. There's an arrow / select button (replica of the top circle buttons on the TiVO remote) at the left of the letters. The interesting thing, it is rotated ninety degrees. This makes sense; you have to turn the remote ninety degrees to use the keyboard, so this orientation is logical or intuitive. The number pad on the right is very useful. Overall, it is super simple to perform any kind of search in the TiVO menus.
By default, the remote control transmits over Bluetooth for TiVO commands if the dongle is plugged in your TiVO. The remote tip glows blue when transmitting. For the volume, input, power, and mute buttons, both Bluetooth and IR commands are transmitted. The cool part of the Bluetooth instructions, it's no longer necessary to point at your TiVO. That's also a curse, if you drop your remote in the couch and buttons start pressing, all those bogus commands will go to your TiVO. I've accidently changed the channel a few times.
Overall, this remote is well built, feels very good in my hand, is super simple to install, and makes searches easy to do. I really like this remote.
I have a PS3, but haven't tried pairing to see if it will work like a keyboard for that device.
Sept. 5, 2010 Update: The remote mysteriously stopped working. IR worked fine, the blue light came on just fine, but the TiVO would do nothing. I tried pairing the remote (pretty easy to do) and nothing worked. So I tried TiVO on line chat - that never ever ever works with any company. But NO TiVO actually hired some smart fast people to help with support (just like their phone support). The problem was a defective bluetooth dongle. They're shipping me a new one. I happened to have a bluetooth USB dongle and tried it out. Voila, it worked. Sweetness.
Still is an awesome remote.
October 13, 2010 Update: PS3 pairing, doesn't work, at least I can't get it to do anything useful. Pairing was impossible through the bluetooth device menu on the PS3 - the PS3 scanned and scanned, the TiVO Slide was in pairable mode, and it was never found. When pairing it under the BD-Remote menu, pairing worked, the remote connected to the PS3. BUT, it wouldn't do anything useful. The keyboard did not work as if I was pressing letters. The buttons did random things - somehow I almost always ended up at the PS3 black screen asking me if I wanted to shut down the system.
So in a word, NO for the PS3.

Average Reviews:

I was looking for a wireless way to send the video & audio from my living room to a bedroom, so that I could watch movies coming from my cable box & DVD player. Having a remote control feature, I chose this model.
I can tell you that the picture was very sharp, and the sound was great. However, I also have a Panasonic KX-TG2730 expandable cordless phone system, which operates on the same 2.4Ghz frequency. With the phone's base plugged in, it produced crackling sound and wide dark bands that scrolled vertically along the picture. Unplug the phone system, and it was flawless. I had read other mixed reviews on interference caused by 2.4Ghz phone systems, but I can tell you that the Panasonic system I mentioned did cause interference for me. I tried moving the phone base, and tried all four channels on the Leapfrog Wavemaster 30 video transmitter, but nothing helped.
In short, if you don't use any other wireless devices using the 2.4Ghz frequency (cordless phones, wireless network devices), the Terk Leapfrog Wavemaster 30 delivers a great picture with equally great sound. If you do use other wireless devices on the same frequency, I would look for a video transmitter that uses a different frequency (or a wired one), or be prepared to return it to the store.

Using the system's IR blaster, you can even control your first-room components from your second-room locations. It's as good as having two or more of everything.By transmitting across the 2.4 GHz frequency band, the LF-30S gives you the clearest possible signal with a range of up to a 150 feet. The Leapfrog's signals penetrate walls, doors, ceilings, and floors with no interference. Multiple channel selection lets you select the best possible signal from four different channels. The LF-30S is easy to install, requiring no tools for setup.A built-in modulator ensures easy connections with any TV, either new or old. Trying to get all my audio and video components out of sight was a primary objective when I came to Amazon and this product certainly created a great foundation for my project. I was able to "stash" my Time Warner Cable Box, Blu_Ray Player, Stereo Receiver and my custom made Media Center PC totally out of sight and fully control all of them with a high end media center IR remote control. All you need is a map of your project a couple of low voltage work boxes and the ability to run skinny wires through the wall to all of your devices. People that visti see my huge Sony XBR LCD TV and look around for the devices that I control with this Wall mounted sensor barely visible beneath my TV hanging on the wall. It also allows for remote control of the wireless IR keyboard with glidepoint so I can sit and use my Media Center PC on the 52" Sony for a stunning Windows 7 experience. The cost of the whole project was less than $100 for the IR plate and the boxes as well as a secondary controller for the Scientific Atlanta HD Cable DVR Box...which I scored on Ebay (these may be hard to find at times!)
If you want to clean up your entertainment center then this is the starting point. Be sure that your devices are IR and not RF or this won't solve your problem and you may need to add additional sensors for RF although RF is designed to travel farther and through objects so you can hide them without loss of signal. HAVE FUN!!

This is a must have for anyone recording video of themselves for youtube and they do not have a second person behind the camera to operate it.
