Optex TD-20U Indoor/Outdoor Wireless Infrared Transmitter Review

Optex TD-20U Indoor/Outdoor Wireless Infrared Transmitter
Average Reviews:

I bought this because I have a long driveway and would like to know when people or vehicles are approaching the house. I've had this installed a while and so far it is performing flawlessly.
The receiver has the option to "learn" codes for 3 transmitters, allowing you to monitor 3 areas simultaneously.
Setup was easy - just plug the receiver in, hook up the battery to the transmitter, and wave your hand in front of it. That's it...the code is now learned and won't be forgotten, even if the power is turned off. There is also a button to "learn" other transmitters if needed. After "learning", mount the transmitter and you're done. The receiver can be mounted on a wall, or the leg popped out and set on a table or counter.
The transmitters are not completely waterproof (no gaskets) and are intended to be mounted under an eave or somewhere that does not get rain directly on it. So if you want to monitor a driveway as I did, you will need to build some type of "roof" over it to shelter it from direct rain. (The clamshell design could use some improvement in this regard.) Other than that, it's real close to perfection.
So far, I've not had any false alarms.

Defender PHOENIX1 Wireless Video Security System with Portable LCD Monitor and Indoor/Outdoor Night Vision Surveillance Camera (Black) Review

Defender PHOENIX1 Wireless Video Security System with Portable LCD Monitor and Indoor/Outdoor Night Vision Surveillance Camera (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I really wanted this system to work. I read all of the reviews and everything seemed great accept for the wireless range. After setting up the system (w/additions camera), all looked great. Setup was easy and directions were clear. The night viewing range was good and the reception range was better than I expected. Initially I was very happy, but after a few days of use I noticed issues with the picture. One camera showed a clear picture while the over was almost completely washed out and at night showed very blurry. And a day after rain or snow, both camera were fogged for a few days. No big deal I thought, I just have a defective camera(s). Unfortunately after replacing the one bad camera, the second camera was now washed out and barely visible. So I figure lets give it one last try and replace the second camera and LCD receiver. Again, same issues. Bad picture on one camera and perfect picture on the other. I finally gave up and returned everything to amazon. Now I'm back to square one.

The PHOENIX1 is an easy to use, wire free, color handheld monitoring system which can be used indoors or outdoors to keep your family and belongings safe and secure. The camera sends audio and video wirelessly to the handheld monitor, which has a 2.5-Inch color LCD screen for crystal clear viewing of your camera's video without need for any wiring. To protect your privacy and avoid interference, the PHOENIX1 wirelessly transmits both audio and video on a different frequency than the standardized 2.4gHz, allowing you to view your video on the without worry of interference or interception. The small but powerful camera features automatically activating night vision which helps you see clearly at night and in dark situations. Keep watch over your belongings and loved ones without a bulky system or wiring with the PHOENIX1.The PHOENIX1's Clear Signal Technology is an answer to many other monitoring systems that experience interference from other wireless signals. With the growing popularity of wireless devices brings interference issues and concerns over interception and privacy. This system transmits audio and video on a 900mHz frequency, creating a clear picture which will not interfere with any of the standardized 2.4gHz wireless networks, devices, and access points within your home or business. Both audio and video signals are able to pass through floors and walls within the 75 foot optimum range. The PHOENIX1 is as portable and versatile as you need it to be. Because the system's camera transmits its audio and video signals over the 900mHz frequency, there is no need to hook any wires from the camera to the monitor. The monitor is powered by a built-in rechargeable lithium battery and the camera is capable of running on battery power, making this system able to operate completely wire free. This way you can carry the LCD monitor with you as you move from your office to warehouse, or move the camera from room to room as your children play.

Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse - Steel Blue Review

Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse - Steel Blue

Reviewer: jbw98ga from Martin, GA United States
It is my good fortune to use a Logitech MX700 mouse at work and a Microsoft Wireless Optical (Steel Blue) mouse at home. Like many reviewers, I initially found them both to be too large and heavy. But after making the transition, a "standard" size mouse now seems small, awkward, and toy-like. Of the two, the MX700 is noticeably heavier. However, one should consider that it is an ultra precise pointing device, so not only is the weight comfortable once one has gotten used to it, but it is also an aid in performing precision work (just as professional photographers often prefer heavier cameras over lighter units). I have been using the MX700 for over a year and the MS mouse for about two months now. I had no installation problems with either unit and have experienced no problems in their operation. I have not yet had to replaces the batteries of either. I find both to be smooth, accurate, and error free. I am not a gamer, so I cannot speak to the appropriateness of either unit for such use. One distinction between the two is that the MX700's scroll wheel gives a ratchet-like click while the MS mouse is unbelievably smooth. Such preferences are highly subjective, but I prefer the feedback of the MX700's click. My major complaint with the MS mouse is that it's "glide" on the mousepad is not very smooth, no matter what mousepad or surface is used. I have gotten used to this, but if the prices were equal, this issue would weigh heavily against the MS mouse.
There is much to like in both of these units and the purchase choice could hinge on either personal preference or on cost factors. My "price is no object" winner is the Logitech MX700, based on my perception of superior performance, near perfect ergonomics, and the fact that it is rechargeable. However, at the time of this writing it is significantly more expensive than the MS mouse (75% more at Amazon.com). In my opinion one truly cannot make a bad choice in choosing between these units. I believe that the MX700 is absolutely the best mouse on the market, but the MS mouse is good enough to warrant consideration and to win the decision if money is an overriding issue.

I purchase this screen for my church worship service. I wasn't sure how really big it was or how it was going to look. I was surprised when it arrived how really big it was. It's a huge screen. Setup was easy. It came with two remotes plus the wall control which I didn't even bother to install. The wireless remote works from about 75 or more feet away. What i love about it is that you can stop it whereever you chose when rolling up or down. The screen rolls down fine and rolls back up without any problems whatsoever. I have been using this for 1 year now and I am extremely happy with my purchase. Elite screen rocks. It looks perfect.

2.4GHz Digital Wireless Baby Video Monitor System With Night Vision -- 2.4" Color LCD Screen (Two-way Radio communication) Review

2.4GHz Digital Wireless Baby Video Monitor System With Night Vision -- 2.4 Color LCD Screen (Two-way Radio communication)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was searching for a good video baby monitor for weeks. I had an audio-only baby monitor, but it's a pity I could not see the condition of my son, e.g. his sleeping position, whether the blanket is in place, etc. Unfortunately, most video baby monitors are either analog (interference) or without the talk-back feature. My old audio-only monitor is analog and it has quite a bit of interference, but it has a good feature: two-way radio for talking back to the child -- a feature that I feel very important.
This 2.4GHz Digital Wireless Baby Monitor System with Night Vision meets all my expectations, at a very affordable price comparatively. It works immediately out-of-the-box, no interference, clear audio and video, good night vision, and I can talk back to my son. The voice activated alarm and video works pretty well. Only one small complaint: it wakes up from sleep mode and turns on the video/audio for only a brief moment (like 5 seconds) which is too short, it would have been better if the duration is like 30 seconds or configurable; but it's not a big deal - I can always turn off the sleep mode immediately with a touch of a button.
I highly recommend this baby monitor.

RCA - Video switch - 4 x component video - desktop Review

RCA - Video switch - 4 x component video - desktop

Does exactly what it advertizes. Switches among 4 component video sources with no noticable loss in quality. I was concerned when I ordered it because it did not come with a remote, so I figured that I'd have to push buttons on the unit to make the switch. It solves that problem with a feature that allows it to learn the signal of any button on any of your remotes and use that to switch the source. So, for me, turning on the DVD player causes this unit to switch to the DVD source, etc. Execellent choice for a component switcher.

Had these up and running in multiple rooms in our house - easy to setup and works great.
HOWEVER we have been banging our heads against the walls recently because our remotes to our Tivo have been working only intermittently - long pauses and not working smoothly.
After some troubleshooting i have discovered that if you have these near (our) LCD Tv, they work sporadically.
I know this is a known issue, but we bought ours several years ago before we had any LCD widescreen TVs. At this point we're having to replace them all with LCD "resistant" units.
Otherwise they have been great, but at this point they are worthless to us.

I'm not sure what the problems might have been with the other reviewer, I'm guessing a malfunctioning device? In any case, I ordered this anyways, and it works exactly as I expected. I had no problems connecting it, and the delay timer works just fine. The only 'trick' seems to be that you have to have the "Shutter release timer" set to at least 1 second, otherwise it won't take any pictures. Therefore, if you want exactly one picture, you also have to set the camera in single-shot mode.
Here are some example settings:
Take 3 pictures, each 5 seconds apart: Set the timer to 5 seconds, elapse time to 1 second, and number of pictures to 3. Camera in single-shot mode.
Take a set of pictures after a 10 second delay, for 3 seconds: Set the timer to 10 seconds, elapse time to 3 seconds, and number of pictures to 1. Camera needs to be in multi-shot mode.Since there's only one timer (as far as I can tell), the initial delay, and the delay between each picture, is always the same. This is semi-annoying, but I can deal with it (so I'll get a few extra pictures in the beginning that I can throw away, no biggie).

AVerMedia MTVUHDDVR Avertv HD USB Digital Video Recorder Review

AVerMedia MTVUHDDVR Avertv HD USB Digital Video Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I primarily bought this to record video games while playing them. I did some recordings and used the video editing software. The quality (720p) is nice and the video was as I had expected and hoped. The interface is simple and easy to use. It is great for what I want it for. Now onto the flaws that I have encountered. First off - the most annoying one which may be a problem with my box in particular. The component connection coming in from the video game source often loses one of the color connections making it look awful. Unfortunately it is captured this way and it simply takes me just slightly moving the box or touching the cables to fix (I have tried different sets of cables). Second problem for you gamers out there. The software seems to have a problem adjusting when the source adjusts resolutions. Example is on the PS3 - I am on the XMB screen prior to loading the game, but once the game loads it adjusts the resolution. At this point the capture screen goes gray and doesn't seem to pick up the source video anymore. If you started your recording prior to starting the game, you would be recording gray the rest of the way. The last problem I had seems to be a software issue, but I can't be sure. I plugged an HDMI cable in for output. NOTE: The HDMI cable is NOT for passthrough to be used during recordings. It is only for media playback. I cannot however playback any media other than what I have recorded directly through the box. Granted it looked great on my 55" 1080p 120Hz LCD, but I could not playback any other video files even though it is supposed to be able to. Everytime I hit the button to output to HDMI, I get a gray screen. Despite submitting a support ticket going on a month ago, they continuously tell me that they are researching the problem. This was a big selling point for me and a bit of a disappointment. Final thoughts - it is solidly built and seems to be well priced for what it does compared to competition. The processing of the capture on the box takes the load off of the PC while allowing you to store and edit directly on the computer. I do recommend the product for it's ease of use and quality per price, but want to warn gamers of the above issues that I encountered. Good luck!

Ordered this remote for my alpha 350... as Sony does not offer anything for a wireless option. Very pleased with the unit. Plug receiver into camera... use the transmitter and away you go. Was originally debating whether I "needed" wireless or could get away with just a cabled remote. Cool thing is that this will serve as both. Has buttons on the corded receiver to act as wired remote, step away and use transmitter for wireless. Receiver has built-in rechargeable battery, comes with charger. Very cool... very happy with this set up. Only had a month or so but seems to work great!

Logitech Harmony H-659 Advanced Universal Remote Control (Black) Review

Logitech Harmony H-659 Advanced Universal Remote Control (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'll make this easy - the Harmony Remotes are the most brilliantly designed piece of consumer electronics I have fiddled with in a long, long time. I have a system of slghtly above average complexity - a 60" projection TV, Onkyo Home Theater receiver, Nintendo Gamecube, PC-based MP3 server (home built), and a combo DVD/VCR. The web-based configuration pretty much nailed all the settings, and the wizard is a great example of someone that did their homework when it came to figuring out all the possible "use cases" for my set up. Its probably not going to be perfect, though, unless you are using all very common components; you will probably have to tweak some of the settings. For example, after selecting the model number of my JVC combo VCR/DVD player, the standard functions worked fine, but the navigation between menus on DVDs was flakey and inconsistent - I went on the harmony web site, tweaked the settings by learning the missing commands, and voila - it works perfectly now.
OK, so why do some people give such seemingly contradictory negative reviews (definitely the minority of reviews)? I have a theory - the Harmony has no idea of what your little kids, guests, or even pets might do to the settings on your AV equipment. The Harmony can only remember the state it left things in. If your 5-year old (or your mother in law) walks up and picks up the TV remote (or goes to the front of the TV) and fiddles with the video inputs, it will throw the Harmony off (the Harmony will think it is set to "S-video" for example, but it might have been changed by your curious 4-year old to "Satellite" or something.)
But this is actually where the Harmony really shines, in my opinon - and shows how brilliant the design is. When things get out of whack, all you have to do it press the "Help" button on the remote, and it will start walking through settings and asking questions in order to determine where the problem is. In over a year of using the Harmony 659, I have yet to encounter a situation where this did not resolve the problem immediately. In fact, I used to get calls at my office from my wife, frantically trying to put in a video for the kids, but not being able to get it to display on the TV (I have it set up to display DVDs via the component connections, but VCR via the S-Video). I'm not kidding, this would happen twice a week - and I would have to walk her through all the settings on the various remotes until things were fixed. With the Harmony, this is no longer an issue - in fact, I have not had a single call in over a year about the A/V setup - that is worth the $100 alone! :-)
I'll provide an example from just this moment - I was programming a new component on the remote while my kids were watching a video. After programming the device, it assumes everything is turned off (which the system was not). My 5-year old picked up the remote, pointed it at the TV, and pushed the "off" button. Nothing happened (because the Harmony thinks things are already off. So, I just picked up the remote, hit the "help" button, and it send a command. The receiver turned off, but not the DVD player. The remote displayed a message that said "Did that fix the problem?" When I selected "No" it then asked if the DVD was off. When I selected "No" it turned it off and then asked "Did that fix the problem?" again. I selected "Yes" and now the remote and the system are back in synch. Very cool
So, the bottom line is that my 5-year old can now walk into the family room, grab the harmony by himself, and push the "watch a movie" button, stick in a video, and he is all set. It used to take assistance from an adult to turn on the TV, turn on the VCR, turn on the receiver, and then set everything to the right input, etc. In fact, my wife said to me recently "I wish you had gotten one of these a long time ago!"

A good universal remote may control an entire home entertainment system, but more often than not, it also looks like the instrument panel of the space shuttle, with dozens of intimidating and confusing keys. Enter the Logitech Harmony 659 remote, which is not only simple to program and use, but also consolidates a user's preferences for watching TV, viewing movies, or listening to music into three clearly labeled buttons. Simply press the Watch a Movie, Watch TV, or Listen to Music button to activate all the appropriate equipment--including surround sound components--and the remote does the rest. The device will automatically switch to your favorite settings for each component, while offering you a host of customized controls on its interactive LCD screen. It's called Smart State Technology, and it puts you and your family back in control of your home theater system.
The remote is an ideal choice for families with kids, though in many cases, it's the grownups that will find the simplicity most appealing. Like many other universals, the remote lets you assign tasks to individual buttons. However, unlike most other remotes, it also lets you create new functions to specifically match your component, such as when controlling multi-angle playback or zoom on a DVD player. To do this, merely connect the Harmony remote to your computer through the USB port, install the included CD software, walk through the Web wizard's step-by-step setup process, and start programming. Once you enter the model numbers of your components and answer a few easy questions about personal preferences, you'll soon be able to control a complex home theater setup without any hassles of frustrations. The Harmony 659 also includes a learning port, which picks up commands from other infrared remote controls to simplify setup even further. And should the setup process ever get too confusing, the remote includes a handy Help button that guides you through common troubleshooting steps--the only remote on the market to do so.
The Harmony 659 is compatible with everything from surround sound systems to satellite and digital cable boxes to DVD players. As a further enticement, Logitech includes two free months of TV listings. For the computer setup to work properly, users will need to own USB-equipped computers running Windows 98 SE, 2000, Me, or XP or Macintosh OS X 10.2 or later.
What's in the Box Harmony 659 remote control, software installation CD, USB cable, four AAA batteries, quick-start guide.

DVDO EDGE High-Definition Video Processor Review

DVDO EDGE High-Definition Video Processor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After having owned numerous 'line-doublers' (all the way back to Faroudja upscaling my 480i sources to 480p for my first home theater,) and innumerable HDMI switchers, I have finally found one that takes the alphabet soup of HDMI versions and handles it with aplomb while being the cleanest and most easy to use upscaler to 1080p that I've touched to date.
So, after having issues with HDCP handshakes, HDMI versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3a, and 1.3b not playing well with most autoswitching units--this product from DVDO does all of the above with aplomb.
Want to take your upscaling DVD player, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, TiVo HD, Wii, and more and mix and match audio inputs to a single optical output? Done.
Want them all at true 1080p (including your wee-little wii?) Done.
Want to get rid of the "Sugar/Mosquito-Noise/Sparkle issue from compression of your HD inbound signal? Nicely done.
Want to see everything pop better on your HD screen without looking artificially processed? Simply Done.
Want power-on priority for various units in your system (the TiVo comes before the Xbox 360, and the Denon 2930ci comes before the PS3?) Again, done and done well.
Add a simple remote, ability to tweak at will (should you even want to) and you have a massive winner of a product.
My biggest worry was any effect I'd have on speed of play with the game consoles--no issue... It not only has a game mode but takes Wii-Widescreen 480p and puts it out at a solid 1080p/60 and looks great doing it.
Films on Blu-Ray with 1080p/24 are stellar (minus the extra stars in the black sky from compression issues.)
All in, I heartily recommend this product--and you'll note that I am fairly even in pans, middling reviews, and OK product discussions, but rarely give a rave.
This is a rave and applause to the DVDO crew. Our household has two and counting now.
[Consider this a laughter-and applause-filled standing ovation.]

I received the item within a few days after ordering. It works great and is very well made. The price was a little high for the amount of times I will be using it but I'm happy with the purchase. If you have the need, I would highly recommend this wireless remote.

The Canon Wireless Controller LC-5 simply attaches to a compatible camera's accessory shoe or can be separately attached to a supplied bracket and connected to the camera's three-pronged N3 Remote socket with the supplied 15-inch receiver cable. The unit is triggered with a pocket-sized transmitter that sends an infrared pulse-modulated strobe signal to the receiver. Powered by 4 AA alkaline batteries (approximately 4,500 operations per set), the LC-5 controller is also compatible with AA-size Lithium, oxyride and Nickel-hydride rechargeable batteries.

Acer AspireRevo AR3610-U9022 Desktop PC (Dark Blue) Review

I don't normally write reviews, but this little guy blew me away. For $125 more so over the 1600 you'll get dual core, 2GB RAM, Windows 7, wireless keyboard and mouse and the VESA mount (its included). And the dual core will make a difference if you are playing back 1080P source material.
Be sure to download the flash beta 10.1 which uses the Ion processor's hardware acceleration or you will be disappointed. Also need the latest NVIDIA drivers. I'm playing movies both through Media Player Classic - Home Cinema and utilizing the PC to run the latest BOXEE beta which while having some bugs really is fun to play with. Boxee will consolidate your media library on your PC or network share (I'm using an UNRAID server, which is fabulous as a media server) along with content from the internet (TV shows, Movies, Apps, You Tube etc..). Thinking about playing with XBMC next (Which Boxee is based on).
The HDMI out is working great for both Video and Audio (not all HDMI outs on PC's support audio as I found out the hard way). There is a utility with the NVIDIA graphics to size the desktop to exactly your flat screen dimensions (no need to play with aspect ratio on your TV).
While not my use, it would make a great extra PC for the kids or significant other if all they do is surf, with an occasional word document here or there.
The PC is really quiet, I simply can not hear it at all and it stays nice and cool.
Highly recommended, but I guess you knew that already!

GE Universal Remote Control 24959 - Universal remote control - infrared Review

First let me tell you I was very skeptical about buying another cheep-o Universal Remote, but I got this at an online auction delivered for $12 so I thought "Why not?" Normally I'm one of those people who would buy the $100 remotes because "they must be better."
The light is very bright and you can control whether or not it even comes on. The buttons are logical however some are smaller. The remote is light weight but feels well constructed.
The code's provided were 100% on 2 of my devices but 2 were partial and 1 did not work with a code at all. The Learning Mode work flawlessly to get all the non-functioning buttons working in about 15 minutes. You can also set functions as forced, so no matter what device is selected that button always works with a particular device, for instance my volume and mute are always on my Amplifiers control. This remote does not script so I have to tell it to turn on each device and select the correct input for my amp (still all on the one remote.)
The manual was misprinted with mine, again not purchased from Amazon and probably the reason I got it discounted. But I can read page 15 before page 13 no biggie.
I have no doubt every device in the house will work with this remote.
The devices I configured are as follows:
Samsung Plasma TV
Samsung Blue Ray (Netfix, YouTube and the like controls all work also.)
Yamaha Receiver
Mediacom HDTV Cable Box (Motorola)
Acesonic Karaoke player
I was able to show the wife in about 3 min and now I have 1 remote to rule them all.
