Jensen HD5313 MP3/WMA/CD/HD Radio Receiver Review

I wanted an HD radio and I-Pod connection. I was not interested in spending a lot because I have an old truck, but my expectation is that you purchase a product and it performs as advertised. So I purchased this radio and installed it. At first everything worked well, I found the HD stations and performed as advertised. Then I connected my I-Pod to the USB connection. Again at first everything was fine, the radio connected to the I-Pod and I was controlling and playing my music through the radio, very cool. Three times it connected and continued to work, then on the fourth connection it stopped connecting to my I-Pod. The connection to the I-Pod was in tact because it charged, but it was not linking to the radio and I could no longer play songs from the I-Pod. I tried a different I-Pod to see if that would work same unsuccessful result. This was a complete disappointment in and of itself, then I called tech support. They gave me some trouble shooting tips that did not work (like hitting the reset button). They told me that updates from Apple might effect this radio and make the I-Pod link to the radio not work. I did not make any connections to my MAC so I know that there was no updates that effected the radio. They told me that I have to pay postage to send the unit in and they would work on it and send it back. Thanks but no thanks! It was under 30 days so I am going to return this POS and get something new. I would have liked to had Audiovox (new owner of Jensen) to send me a rebuilt or new unit that I could use while the repair was being done, or replaced the unit immediately. Remember this was less than 30 days when it stopped working properly, not months.

Sony RM-AX1400 Eight-Device Home Theater Remote Control Review

Sony RM-AX1400 Eight-Device Home Theater Remote Control
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Folks,
I was very concerned about this remote because of all the bad reviews, but after reading the reviews on epinions, it showed me how to use this remote better than the manual could. I can now recommend this remote.
This remote has an XML back-end which is really an amazing step forward in technology and very customizable; and with a bit of patience and clear instructions, this remote delivers very well.
Before you discount this remote from the other negative reviews, read this detailed review BELOW which helped me:""
by chrisell
To program the unit, the software wizard steps you through a learning process. I'm told that it works quite well if it actually recognises your old remote. To do this, it will ask for a certain button to be pressed - play, power, something like that. Then it searches it's available preset device list for a matching code and configures the remote to match. Only it doesn't always work. Actually in my case, it didn't work for any of the 4 remotes I wanted to teach it. I'm not sure why but maybe if I'd installed the firmware update first, it would have been different.
Given that it couldn't find any of my devices, I had to do each one by hand. A bit laborious, but not too bad, and I had 100% success rate when doing it manually. Basically, the software steps through all the keys it thinks you'd want to use for the type of device you're programming, and asks you to fire your old remote at the new one so it can learn the infra-red code. At the end of this you have a roughly-configured set of keys. I say roughly, because this is where the fun starts if you're a tinkerer like me. Once you get to the 'advanced' settings, you can pretty much make this thing do anything. All the buttons in the advanced view are colour-coded to let you know if they've got a predetermined code on them, a learned code or an alias to another key elsewhere in the remote. Keys that don't have a colour assigned to them are blank and waiting to be used.
The process of manually learning codes from the advanced screen is a bit odd and the helpfile is bloody useless (you'll find that comment about this remote in ALL the reviews). Knowing how these reviews get propagated around the internet, I thought a quick how-to might be worth including here:
From the advanced screen, click the button for the device you want to customise and click "Edit Buttons". The software brings up a picture of the remote. Click the button you want to learn a code for and then click "Edit Actions". This is where the helpfile falls apart but it's actually pretty easy. On the 'Edit actions' screen there's another 'learn' button right at the bottom - click it and go through a manual learn process for that one button and voila - done.
The 'Edit actions' screen is also where the real power of the RM-AX1400 comes into play because here you can assign aliases to any other key already programmed and add delays. You can also stack up codes, aliases and delays together - effectively ANY key on the remote can become a macro. Clever, and nice for the technically-minded, but this precise feature is why this remote might not be great for the people who just want to pick it up and go.
There's been a little discussion here and there on the remote forums about the Jump function of this remote. Simply put, it just changed the display and remote key functions. So for example if you want to create a macro to watch a movie, you can power on your DVD, power on the receiver, power on the TV, set the receiver to the DVD input and then Jump the remote to the DVD settings. It's a nice touch and it means that when you hit the "movie" macro, everything turns on and the remote ensures it's in DVD mode when the macro is complete.
Most of the keys that you program can be assigned a name that shows up in the middle line of the OLED display when you push the button. One thing that's a little irritating is that by default, only the outer two of the soft buttons can be programmed for any device, and by default, they have their labels set to POWER and INPUT. There's no way to change this in the software, however, if you're not afraid of a little XML programming, your remote's configuration is all stored in an XML file called urmgui.xml. The way to manually override the default labels is to set everything up the way you want it, then assign some easily-identifiable name to the softkey you want to rename, like "ZZZZ1". Save the file out of the software and then open up the XML file in a text editor and search for "ZZZZ1". You'll find an XML button definition with two labels. The first label is the 6-character softkey label - the one that defaults to "POWER" or "INPUT". The second label is the name you can enter that shows up in the middle line of the display - in this case "ZZZZ1". Change both to be what you want and you're done.
Why all this detail? Well my projector, for example, has a power button on the remote that turns the projector on. But to turn it off, you need to push the button, wait a moment for the confirmation on the screen, then push it again. So I assigned the two soft keys so that one was "power on" which issued the remote code once, the other was "power off" which issued it twice with a half-second delay in between (using the advanced editor functions). The problem was that one label said "POWER" and the other said "INPUT" so I changed them in the XML file to say "PWRON" and "PWROFF".
So apart from all the nauseating technical detail, what's it like to use? Well apart from the slightly odd form factor which makes it a bit clunky for smaller hands, it's a delight to use in a darkened room to control a home theatre system. All the buttons are logically placed, and a user-configurable beep lets you know you've pushed the button and it's sent the remote code. The buttons have a slightly squishy sensation to them but I prefer this to the horrible 'click' on the Harmony remotes. Unlike the Logitech Harmony remotes that have a weird delay on the volume controls, I can press and hold the volume controls on the Sony and my receiver smoothly ramps the volume up and down - something I could never get my Harmony remote to do. A couple of the buttons you'd expect to be illuminated, aren't, which is a bit of a mystery. Like the 'menu' button. Fortunately, it's placed right next to the arrow keys so it's easy to memorise its location, and that in essence is what makes this remote so nice for me - hard buttons. I don't need to look at the remote to know where the keys are. Philips Prontos are all very nice, but you always have to look at the screen to see what the buttons do. With the Sony, it's like a well-laid out TV remote, even if it is a bit brick-like.
One last feature worth mentioning - the software has a backup facility which stores a binary dump of your remote on to your PC for safekeeping. So if you're messing around with the software and screw everything up, you can restore the backup and start again.
So would I recommend this? I answered 'yes' to the epinions question and gave it 4/5 stars. It drops one star because my 'yes' answer really only applies for people who are technologically savvy and willing to give this remote the time it deserves to get the most out of it. Honestly if you want a "plug'n'play" type remote, you'd probably be better off looking elsewhere.

After I received it all ( 1st box came with no cam ) I hooked it up . I don't know if its the monitor or the cam but the picture is not what I was expecting @ ALL . If EVERYTHING is not @ the right angle and the sun is in the cams view you will get a BAD reflection off of everything and its hard to see a thing . The wiring harness could be made a little more simple and easy ( bad R&D ). I have not tryed the night part yet but im sure it will have its probs to . I would return it but I already have a custom made spot for it so im kinda stuck . O well

Terk Leapfrog Remote Control Extender Kit LFIRX Review

Terk Leapfrog Remote Control Extender Kit LFIRX
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the Terk Leapfrog to control my Tivo from the bedroom, after running cables for the audio/video through the wall. In the end, this has worked excellently for me - so let me explain why it doesn't get the full 5 stars.
Initial setup with this product couldn't be easier. You simply unpack the two pieces, plug in the two included AC adapters - and that's it! I was surprised there was no programming it to accept certain IR codes... it just picks up whatever the remote might be throwing out, and relays it appropriately. When I first unpacked it, I set the one unit right in front of my Tivo, sitting about 2 inches from the Tivo's IR receiver. I took the other one into our bedroom and plugged it in. Presto - I could control the Tivo from the bedroom.
Now that I'd confirmed it worked, I went back to my living room to try and find a nice, out of the way place for the Terk Leapfrog to sit. It obviously had to have a clear line of sight to the Tivo... which I figued left me with plenty of choices. I tried putting it on a bookshelf, that was on quite an angle from the Tivo - but with no luck. I tried hiding it behind a picture frame (where is still had a clear line of sight to the Tivo) on a table that was closer to the Tivo... but again no luck. I went on to try 4-5 other places around the room, but could never make it work consistently.
Finally, I placed it *behind* the tivo, and used the included IR 'extender' (which is a little cable, with a peanut sized IR transmitter on the end). I snaked this little cord under the tivo, and then attached the little IR transmitter so it's aiming right at the Tivo's IR reciever. This, finally, worked. Just for comparison, I can aim my Tivo remote almost anywhere in the room and have the signal picked up by the Tivo, so I'm confident that the Tivo is not the problem here.
So... The good thing about this product is that it does work... the bad thing is that it seems it needs to be aimed by a professional sharpshooter to get the signal to your device.
Pros:
-Super fast setup
-Works great with your Tivo
Cons:
-Hard to get the 'placement' of the IR sender just right.

This unit was very easy to install although finding the IR receivers on the other components was challenging. I wish the remote had numbers on it. I understand making it simple but it makes for slow channel access. I found myself having to keep the digital cable box remote for speed and convenience. I love the internet radio access and the ipod dock is a definite add-on we were glad we purchased. The unit is small and well laid out. This is a good looking piece. Unfortunately we have the tv in a corner and the surround sound is okay but not great. I think if this was set out properly it would work quite well. I do recommend this to anyone looking for a universal remote and good quality amplifier.

HDmi Over CAT5/CAT6 Wallplate Extender Kit Hdmi for f Review

HDmi Over CAT5/CAT6 Wallplate Extender Kit Hdmi for f
Average Reviews:

I actually have three of these and while they do accomplish the task, it is not without some caveats. First, they definitely need to be on cat6 cables. I ran from my dvd player to my TV at 20ft over builder installed cat5e the cables of which are probably not the same length and going directly to the TV it had multiple black outs and white screen splotches. But once I connected it as dvd=>HDMI Over Cat 5=> Receiver=> TV, the receiver cleaned up the signal so that there were no longer any more blackouts and everything was fine. Now for another one of the runs, it is 40ft-45ft. For this one, I just forgot about the Cat5e and put in new Cat6 cables which definitely made a difference. Going directly to the TV, there is only a cutout perhaps once every hour to hour and a half. Once I put a receiver on the other end of this one, I'm confident that the drop outs will cease like they did on the first one. The last one is on cat6 cables going for about 20ft directly to the TV. This TV doesn't have any drop outs at all. For those interested, the receiver is a Sony HT-SS2300, the DVD player is the Sony 400 DVD mega changer and the TVs are Insignia and Samsung. Also of note is that I did try some of the lesser priced HDMI over Cat5 wall plates and they did not complete the handshake so these items seem to be very device dependent.

Channel Plus 3025 All-in-One Multiroom Video Distribution System with Dual Input Modulator Review

Channel Plus 3025 All-in-One Multiroom Video Distribution System with Dual Input Modulator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought this unit to distribute the signal from an HDTV cable box to several TVs throughout the house. The cable box is connected to an HDTV normally but I wanted to be able to see the movie, music, and HDTV channels on my other TV sets without having to rent additional cable boxes (my other TVs are cable-ready but do not have HDTV tuners).
My first impression of the box was disappointing. Since all my TVs have cable tuners, I connected the incoming coax into both the HDTV cable box and the 3025 so that I could still tune channels independently from the cable box. The composite video output from the cable box went into the 3025. At this point you are ready to select the channel that the 3025 will use and this is where the fun starts. You are then supposed to set your 3025 to an "empty" channel in your system. After going through all the supposedly empty channels in my system, I could not find a channel that would give me a decent picture. I was able to get a picture from the cable box but it was always full of snow and interference.
After further research at the Channel Plus site, I decided to try a low-pass filter, a Channel Plus LPF-750. This filter passes only CATV channels 2-116, allowing me to use channels 121 to 124 on the 3025.
Well, after ordering this rather expensive filter, SUCCESS! Now I can view HDTV and encrypted channels in any room, not with the same quality as on my HDTV of course. I have not been able to pass stereo, it seems to convert everything to mono and have not had time to determine if this is normal. I am also using the Channel Plus 2173 and 2133 infrared units to control the cable box remotely successfully.
Overall, I am satisfied with the system. Just remember that if you have CATV you may also need a low-pass filter.

The Channel Plus 3025 multiroom video distribution system converts audio/video signals from a pair of video sources--such as a VCR, DVD player, satellite dish, cable box, or video camera--and modulates them into two user-selected channels (UHF or cable). As a result, you can view each video source on up to five TVs at once. The perfect system for large homes with several TVs or taverns that want to show video on several screens at once, the 3025 distribution system's digital programming is easy to set up. Simply push a channel select button to choose the unused channel, and the internal microprocessor digitally sets the modulator to the exact FCC channel specification. From that point forward, you can switch any connected TV to one of the two "in-house" channels and watch DVD movies, cable or satellite channels, and virtually anything else. As a bonus, the channel settings are retained in the memory during a power failure, so you don't have to reprogram the unit after an electrical storm.
The 3025 also offers an optional infrared (IR) control option, which lets you operate connected video sources from a different room. To activate the IR control, users will need to purchase a model 2133 set-top IR target, which connects to the 3025 amplifier on one end and the TV set on the other. When the viewer presses a button on the remote, it sends an IR signal to the 2133 target. The target then passes the signal to the 3025 video hub via its coaxial cable. Finally, the hub routes the signal through an IR emitter (also sold separately), which repeats the remote control signal back to the original video source. The end result is the ability to control a DVD player or cable box from several rooms away.
The model 3025 distribution system is pre-engineered to provide optimal signal levels to each TV for clear, crisp picture quality. While it's possible to add a splitter and route the signals to additional TVs, viewers should note that the image quality will suffer. The 3025 also requires that two of the TVs be located within 35 feet, while the other three TVs must sit within 150 feet.
The 3025, which measures 5.5 by 6.8 by 2 inches (W x H x D), requires separately sold coaxial cables and A/V cables for connection and is backed by a one-year warranty.
What's in the BoxBase unit, power supply, four mounting screws, user's manual.

Universal Remote Control MX-500 10-Device LCD Viewscreen Remote Control with Joystick Operation Review

Universal Remote Control MX-500 10-Device LCD Viewscreen Remote Control with Joystick Operation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I highly recommend the MX-500 for anyone trying to control 4+ devices in a home theater system. You can program it to control almost any device with the built-in codes or use the original remote that came with your equipment to "teach" the MX-500 the necessary codes. I use it to control a Directivo, Zenith TV, Panasonic DVD player, Mitsubishi & GE VCRs, Yamaha CD player and a Sony digital receiver.
Customization is very easy, with the ability to edit button labels (on the LCD screen) with the names or types of your equipment, and the ability to program buttons for 50 of your favorite channels (a must if you have satellite or cable service of 150+ channels). The MX-500 also permits macro programming, i.e., the ability to execute multiple commands with one button. For example, the "Power" button can be programmed to power on all your home theater equipment; the "System Off" button can be programmed to turn it all off. Three other macro buttons are provided for other customized, multiple commands.
You can also teach it, like most higher-end remotes, to "push down" certain commands, e.g., the volume buttons can be set to manipulate the volume of your home theater receiver, regardless of which device you are using (DVD, VCR, TV).
The IR range of the remote is excellent: I've changed channels across the room pointing the remote at the wall !! Battery life is also top-notch (it uses 4 AAA batteries) and the user manual is well-written.
The one weakness with this remote is that the "select" button (the black center bezel) is a little awkward to use because it's almost too stiff. I tend to use the joint of my thumb rather than the pad to engage it because otherwise I was inadvertently hitting the up, down, or left/right arrows.
End-user support via discussion forums and dedicated sites like remotecentral is excellent so you can always find an answer to a question you may have that the manual doesn't cover, as well as tips and tricks for using/programming the remote.
If you want absolute customization in a universal remote, then buy the more expensive Philips Pronto (or the costly Pronto Pro) which with available software, permit you to use your PC to edit every aspect of the remote. But if you want near perfect customization at an affordable price, then you can't miss with the MX-500.

Gear4 UnityRemote Universal Remote Control for iPod/iPhone/iPad Review

Gear4 UnityRemote Universal Remote Control for iPod/iPhone/iPad
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although this remote is not perfect, I found it to be a very adaptable, useful device. I have had few of the problems cited in another review of this product. For example, I was easily able to teach it the specialized buttons from my various other remotes, including an Apple Remote--the trick, which it took me only a couple of minutes to discover, is to hold the IR emitting end of the remote very close to the UnityRemote device and then to press and release (not hold) the button you want to teach to the UnityRemote. And, although I have experienced a few unexpected quits while using the device, they have been relatively rare.
In any case, I expect crashes and confusions to get rarer as the software is updated. Note, by the way, that the software is very easy for a user to update. In the short time that I've had the UnityRemote, I have already received and installed an update, which was delivered and installed just like any other iOS app update: you download it right from Apple's App Store wirelessly, or download it via iTunes and install it automatically the next time you sync your iOS device. You don't even have to wonder if an update is available: the App Store tells you when one shows up.
What I like best about the UnityRemote is how easy it is to create custom keypads for various activities. With other universal remotes, I have usually had to have the manual at hand, and to go through certain arcane keypresses or gestures in order to move buttons around and rename them. The UnityRemote app, on the other hand, is an iOS app, and uses the same gestures and conventions that all of the other iOS apps use, so editing keypads is a very familiar-feeling process.
If you're interested, I have written a much more complete review, which you can [...]

RCA DIRECTV System DRD435RH - Satellite TV receiver - DIRECTV Review

RCA DIRECTV System DRD435RH - Satellite TV receiver - DIRECTV

(More customer reviews)
I got this unit to use with DirecTV in 2002. It performed very well. Occasionally, it crashed, and had to be unplugged for a few seconds to be reset. This happened only every few months, so it wasn't a big deal. Sometimes the box responded slowly to the remote, but it fixed itself after a few hours. The menu operation was close to perfect. I liked this practically trouble-free thing, until February 3, 2010.
That morning, I was in the office and heard what sounded like an M80 firecracker in the living room. The dog ran into the hallway in a panic. I went to see what made the noise. Smoke was pouring out of the DRD435RH receiver. The room was filled with it and it smelled really weird. I unplugged the very hot box, unhooked the cables and tossed it outside. I suspected a voltage hit, but nothing else was damaged. VCR, DVD, digital converter box, DVR, TV sets, computers, everything was fine. The UPS didn't beep or show anything wrong. The receiver simply chose that moment to explosively die. I looked inside and it was black and melted in places. It may have started a fire if I didn't work at home. As it is, the failure was mildly inconvenient and DirecTV is sending a new box.
So, this was a wonderful product for eight years until it literally blew up.

However, I can not seem to turn my LG 42LH50 HDTV functions with it (On/Off, TV Volume, TV Input selector).
On The Green Button website forum, I asked where I could get a Media Center Remote that does these functions, and was shocked to learn that this remote does those.
Shame on ASUS for not including a manual!
I have emailed Noah Company (the manufacturer) for a new manual, but I have not received a response yet.
If someone has an electronic version of the instructions for this remote, could you please let me know?

Yamaha RX-V1065BL 7.2-Channel Digital Home Theater Receiver (Black) Review

Yamaha RX-V1065BL 7.2-Channel Digital Home Theater Receiver (Black)

I needed to replace a couple of old receivers so I found a great deal on the RX-V1065 and RX-V765 on Amazon. I ended up getting both of them for aboout what 2 V665's would have cost me a a Big Box store. I first setup my Main Theate Room with the 1065, I thought it was somewhat difficult to get everything the way I wanted it but the automatic speaker setup was slick and the sound is fantastic compared to my old Sony I had previously. The Menu system takes some getting use to but once you do it's not bad to navigate. All in all I was pretty darn happy with my purchase, My JBL's sounded much better then before and although I didn't really notice any difference in video quality, it was as good as before and now I had everything coming thru the same box. Surround sound was a huge step up from my old receiver also, you are almost looking behind you now because you'd swear someone is behind you, where on my old Sony it was more or less a quieter front speaker.
I then went to hook up my 765 in my cave TV room, first thing that I noticed was that is basically identical to the 1065, sure the menu system is not as polished but as far as the functionality that I need it is the same. I have a few year old Bose surround sound in this room with a JBL center chanel speaker and what a HUGE difference this receiver made over my old Onkyo, the Onkyo was really good for music but surround sound was sub par, but it was 10 years old I guess. Granted I'm only hooking up a Xbox 360, blue ray and TV in this room but watching Vikes beat up the the Packers in surround sound with this receiver was great, I haven't figured out which sound field I like best but there are a couple perfect for sports.
One of the coolest things was when I grabbed the TV remote from my Samsung LCD by mistake to turn the volume down and it says RX-V765 un the upper corner and starts to tun down the volume of the receiver from the TV, displaying the volume the whole time it's changing. I guess that Anynet capability on the Samsung TV's with a HDMI reciever gives you a few more bells and whistles. Also really cool is when I turn on the Xbox or turn off the TV the receiver will come on or off accordingly. I haven't setup the remote for additionaly devices yet, but it seems to be easy to use and is exactly the same for the 765 and 1065, I actually expected the remote to be better for the 1065 so i was a little disapointed when I saw it, but in using it it seems OK/
One thing I do not like is the Zone 2 ability on the 1065, I almost wish is was more or less a A/B speaker selector, I have a normal 5 speaker surround setup, in addition to that I have 2 speakers in the kitchen, right behind the TV room which are connect to Zone 2 that when I'm listening to music we like to have on so that you have more sound. The problem is that Zone 2 running the same input as the Main Room is off by a few fractions of a second and if you stand right between the 2 rooms, it sounds like the song is a half a second behind in the kitchen, I tried the lipsync thing, which only made it worse, I haven't given up on it yet, but it's not obvious how to fix this.
Bottom Line -
Both the 1065 and the 765 have more inputs than I know what to do with.
Neither have HDMI on the front, I didn't want it anyway, as I think it looks stupid to set all your equipment up and then have a big cable hanging off the front of your system anyway. That's why the put the jacks on the back, right???
May not have quite as many sound fields as some others out there, but I pick the 2 or 3 I like for movies, sports and music anyway and don't care about the rest.
The YPAO is cool and works great to setup the speakers.
The onscreen Menu is better on the 1065 but adequate on the 765.
HI-DEF Radio sounds amazing on both.
Don't think I will ever use the remotes as universal remotes, but they are adequate for running the receivers.
I cannot comment much on the video conversion, as everything I am running is HDMI and looks the same as it die running straight into the TV.
Sound on both of these is fantastic, even at volumes that start to hurt, the sound is clear, the bass is crisp not slow and there is no distortion, my old receivers would make my speakers start to hiss at a much lower volume, and these receivers never do.
Save yourself some money though get the 765, once it's all setup and you don't need to go into the menu anymore, you'll never notice the difference.
I read a lot of reviews and narrowed it down to Onkyo and Yamaha, at last second I pulled the trigger on Yamaha and for what I paid on Amazon for the 2 of them I am thrilled with my purchase

I bought this to use with my Nikon D3100. I had some issues with this remote. The manual appears to be a literal translation to English, so parts of the manual initially do not make sense without a little interpretation on your part. I mention the manual's translation because I believe it influenced my overall experience with the remote.
The biggest issue I had with the remote is the signal being sent between the two units at a constant two-second interval. Possibly to keep the units in synch? Anyway, this signal would be interpreted by the D3100 as the shutter being halfway depressed. It's very frustrating when trying to set the metering or focus just to have it reset while recomposing the scene. The workaround was to use manual focus and AE lock. The instruction manual was of little use, because I didn't quite understand their fix to the problem due to the way the translation reads. I went to the manufacturer's web site hoping there might be a pdf of the manual that was better translated (I've found that to be the case on many occasions with different products) but there is no support for ANY of their products. There were only sales and marketing related links.
Interestingly I had no problems using it as a remote flash trigger. It turned out to be more useful this way.
Ultimately I returned the remote for a refund. It's possible that the unit I received was defective, hence the constant half depressed signal to the shutter.
I gave it three stars because the remote was OK. It's definitely not garbage, but didn't measure up enough for me to keep either. Had the instructions be clearer, or support was available at the manufacturer's web site this may have easily been a 4 (or even 5) star review.

Next Generation Remote Control Extender (418 mhz) Review

Next Generation Remote Control Extender (418 mhz)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased two of these units, one on each frequency, to address a situation where IR remote control of two TV set ups in adjacent rooms visible to each other was causing unintended operation. By "blinding" the IR sensors after attaching the IR heads from the RF extenders it did solve the problem.
The caveats are:
- Don't expect easy access to technical support from the company. Emails go totally unanswered. Phone messages left go unanswered. If you are lucky enough, however, to actually reach someone on the phone when you call, Bob in my case (once), you can get help.
- I could not make the RF extender work to turn on or off a Motorola DCT-700 cable box. In fact with the remote supplied by cable company it would not work at all. (What made this really strange is that the incredible sensitivity of the IR control of the DCT-700 is the reason I had the problem I was trying to solve!) When I substituted a Logitech Harmony remote I was able to easily control the cable box, but still not the on-off function on a reliable basis. (I solved the problem by leaving the cable box on all the time). When I did talk to Bob he acknowledged that they had issues with some cable boxes - something to do with IR pulse length - and that they have an updated version of the receiver designated with a "+" that may address the issue. He offered a swap out if I called and asked for this, but as I could never reach him again I did not pursue this approach.
- Be very careful if you do buy units on the two different frequencies. While the battery sized transmitters are color coded, the two receivers look identical in EVERY way right down to the model number and FCC designation. (I have no idea how they manage to keep these sorted out in their own operations!) After getting them mixed up a few times, I ended up using adhesive labels on each receiver to identify them.
- In most set ups you will need more than the single IR extender head included in the package. An optional 3-head cable costs extra.
- The receiver has 3 settings. The instructions indicate that some equipment may work better, or only, with one of the settings. As such it is quite possible that you could end up with a single RF extender receiver not being able to control all your gear. As the most likely role for this kind of unit will be to control many boxes inside a closed cabinet, this restriction could be an issue, and require you to buy 2 units for the same system. (I did not run into this as I used the extender ONLY for the cable box. I used the normal IR for the TVs as they were different models and didn't cross impact each other.)
- As noted in the instructions the location of the battery like transmitter in a remote that uses multiple batteries can be critical, and requires trial and error.
- The nature of the design means that you do need to swap the rechargeable batteries on a regular basis. The unit comes supplied with two and the receiver charges the one not in use. The challenge is that there is no indication that the batteries need swapped, other than when the remote no longer works. This is a minor inconvenience, but in a unit with this price tag a more elegant approach would have been nice. (I don't yet have experience of the battery life in the Harmony remotes.)
Overall, as noted in other reviews I have read, this is a really innovative and neat concept, that when needed in the kind of situation I was in and others, is a great solution. However the actual implementation, and particularly the virtually non-existent support, leave a bit to be desired so it can't be recommended without reservation. Expect to spend quite a bit of time getting things working reliably.
Using one of the top-end Harmony remotes with RF capability built-in is almost certainly a more elegant solution to most problems addressed by this unit, albeit a more expensive approach.

Marantz SR5004 Audio/video Receiver (Black) Review

Marantz SR5004 Audio/video Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This beautiful new receiver is packed with high-end options and the sound quality is nothing short of exemplary. For a full listing of technicals and features, see the site at: [...]. As compared to Yamaha, Onkyo, Denon, and Pioneer, you'll notice a far more "natural" and "forward" sound, whereas the formers are more "punchy", "dark" or "processed". Marantz has been at the business of making receivers in this vein a long time and the 5004 is sure to please even the most discerning audiophiles. Of course, if you have $8K to spend, the Reference series is a nice upgrade. But for us common folk who still appreciate the performance and sound quality that a top-end receiver can produce, this is the one. On the "things to consider side", the SR5004 only has 3 HDMI outputs, so if you're in need of more such connections for your home theater, you might need to consider upgrading to the 6004. All in all, however, you can't beat this receiver for the money. This reviewer recommends pairing it with either Polk RTI or Bowers & Wilkins 600 series speakers.
