I Have been using the 5070-2584 ir receiver (and the blaster cable 5188-6055) with my HP notebook. It's great. Just follow the windows media center setup instructions and you'll have a dvr. It works with any provider's settop box. I have Directv. The photo doesn't show the blaster cable (emitter cable that goes to the settop box infra-red window). And the receiver is pretty generic. It's used on a huge number of products, so ignore the Picasso reference.

Smarthome LCD Compatible IR Receiver Kit with Flush Mount Sensor

Very easy to set up. No discernable delay between using the remote and having the component respond. I have an LCD TV, LG blue ray player, Sony receiver and Sony CD Jukebox. No signs of interferance with the TV and all components function. I have found that the transmitters fall off the components sometimes, so if you aren't getting a response from the remote, check because the transmitter has probably come off and needs to be reattached.

Dual Stick-On Ir Emitters By Smarthome Review

Dual Stick-On Ir Emitters By Smarthome
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you've ever tried to attach an IR emitter to:
a) a bulging IR receiver lens (DirecTV)
b) whole on a curved surface (Replay TV)
or need to stack IR emitters (Reply TV/TIVO) then you'll appreciate these emitters. The side next to the equipment has a small step so the emitter is not in contact with the IR receiver lens. THe tops are flat so you can esilt stack two deep if you need, for instance if you need have a TIVO control your satellite or cable box and want to have remote IR control.
A simple device that Smarthome bothered to think through.
Thanks guys!

RF-Link AVS-5811 5.8GHz Audio and Video Transmission System with IR Repeater Review

RF-Link AVS-5811 5.8GHz Audio and Video Transmission System with IR Repeater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a hi-tech gadget guy who is hard to please, but this far exceeded my expectations! I have it connected from a bedroom Directv Receiver(6" from a 2.4GHZ wireless PC lan) to a kitchen 15" Magnanox LCD TV sitting 12" below a micrwave oven without interference from microwave or lan! I'm even transmitting through 6 walls and a 5 gal. metal potato chip bucket and people walking in the kitchen without affecting the picture! I was getting a super picture w/o even having 1 antenna directly facing the other antenna. I thought I was going to have to run between floors for hours until everything was aligned perfectly - it only took 15 seconds because alignment is very forgiving. Picture quality is 5 star crystal clear with no lines, static, etc. All TV channels are 5 star and the HDTV stations blew me away even though I know its not sending true HDTV though the avs-5811.
What surprised me most was that I could use my bedroom Directv remote (down in the kitchen) to change channels (up in the bedroom) by simply pointing at the (kitchen)avs-5811 receiver. It sends the remote control signal upstairs to a "mouse" that you place in front of your TV receiver, cable box, etc, IR sensor. I had a spare remote so I keep 1 in kitchen and 1 in bedroom for convenience.
The owners manual iS POOR and doesn't tell you all this, but basically I can point the remote at the avs-5811 receiver in kitchen requesting a Directv channel change (or any other remote control function) in the upstairs bedroom. The avs-5811 transmitter in the bedroom receives the request and sends it through the "mouse" to the Directv Receiver which changes the channel as requested and the new channel video and sound is return to the kitchen! Pure magic and ingenious!
It is a very cost effective way, without losing picture quality and convenience, to avoid running cables and drill holes through my tiled walls or granite counters.

The average home entertainment system once consisted of a TV, stereo, and maybe a cable box. Now a modern system may also include a DVD player, satellite receiver, surround sound amplifier, digital video recorder, and an HD tuner, along with a PC designed to serve as a digital hub for certain audio/video functions. The RF Link AVS-5811 takes A/V technology to the next logical step by wirelessly transmitting audio and video signals from these components to any nearby TV, monitor, or stereo system, letting you enjoy vivid video and hi-fi stereo sound anywhere in the house. The A/V sender effectively lets you send signals to components located upstairs, several rooms away, or elsewhere without running bulky, space-consuming cables in the walls or under the floorboards. With the AVS-5811, viewers can watch simultaneous DVD or satellite programming on upstairs and downstairs TVs, or listen to their favorite tunes on stereos in three different rooms--all without wires. They can also use the sender to watch live video from a camcorder or CCD camera in a remote location, whether for security or entertainment purposes. Users who edit video or capture footage from TV programs on their computers will also find plenty to like about the device, as they can easily send the video from their Macs or PCs directly to a living room TV for viewing.
The AVS-5811 comes with a 5.8 GHz wireless transmitter and a receiver with four selectable channels. Unlike more common 2.4 GHz transmitters, the AVS-5811 doesn't share a band with Bluetooth devices, cordless phones, 801.11b wireless LAN networks, and microwave ovens, ensuring a sharp, interference-free video signal. The four channels are also a bonus, as it lets users set up multiple transmitters and receivers in the same area without cross-channel noisiness. In addition, the sender includes a built-in IR remote extender that controls components from a distance, so a user can mute the bedroom TV while relaxing on the living room sofa, for instance. The sender features an NTSC/PAL video system and transmits to distances as great as 400 feet without obstructions. It's also relatively compact at 6.5 by 4.13 by 10.5 inches (W x H x D).
What's in the Box Transmitter, receiver, two A/V RCA cables, two AC power adapters, IR mouse (remote extender), user's manual.

Smarthome 2411R IRLinc Receiver IR to INSTEON Converter Review

Smarthome 2411R IRLinc Receiver IR to INSTEON Converter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I use this with a Harmony remote to turn my entertainment system off at the wall, instead of just putting the devices into standby. No more constantly-glowing LEDs, and no more power-sucking idle devices (a Kill-A-Watt pegged my setup at 30W when off!).
The setup procedure has several steps. Follow the directions to the letter.
The device works as advertised. The adhesive on the bottom of the receiver will not be enough to affix it in place securely - but rolled-up duct or electrical tape will do the job. The credit card remote which comes with it is unobtrusive, but I use my universal remote instead. The device can learn NEC VCR remote codes, and since I don't have an NEC VCR, that's enough for me - I don't care which other codes are "compatible".
The pricing of this unit is, like all of the specialized Insteon gear, quite a bit on the high side. But you get what you pay for.

I had the same experience as Thomas Schnyder. Wasted a couple of hours trying to install this, and finally called Startech tech support and got the scoop - Check your OS, because the USB2IR2 won't work on a 64-bit OS. Startech now has the USB2IRX, which you will need if your OS is 64-bit. I don't fault the device, but I give Startech points off for not making this clear on the product promo material, but give their Tech Support a high grade for quickly helping me ID the problem in just a few minutes and tell me the solution.

Sewell Infrared (IR) Remote Control Repeater Wall Plate Kit (Emitter and Receiver) Review

Sewell Infrared (IR) Remote Control Repeater Wall Plate Kit (Emitter and Receiver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all I have installed this in my home and the product works great. I have a flat screen mounted on the wall and I did not want to have to the cable box in sight. So I have my cable box on a media room in the basement.
Once the wires were ran through the wall the setup is very simple. I used an old phone cable to connect the receiver with the repeater. The only thing that gave me a little bit of a hard time was connecting the tiny phone cable wires into the sockets on each end. I took my time and was able to get everything connected. Expect a little bit of lag when pressing a button on your remote since it has to travel through wires and be repeated. The lag is not terrible in my opinion. This is a far better solution that having to find a place to put a cable box when your tv is mounted on the wall.

No problems at all with a newly built Windows 7 Home Theatre PC. Plugged in the IR receiver, pressed the little green windows button (because it was colorful) and Media Center popped up. Within minutes I had everything set up to listen to music, view pictures and record TV through a Hauppauge TV card. So happy I bought another one for a second HTPC.

Hot Link Pro Remote Control Booster System Review

Hot Link Pro Remote Control Booster System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To all:
Thank you for your interest in this feedback forum for Hot Link Pro.
Following are some answers to the problems, questions, and suggestions that have appeared on this forum.
We make every effort to make certain clients can contact us with support questions. The web site and phone number are molded into the bottom of every unit. In the case of this forum we have yet to make contact with those who have had less than a stellar experience with Hot Link Pro.
Hiding the Eye:
We intend no holes to be drilled for the Eye to see through. There is a Velcro Kit and a screw tab for mounting the eye. This screw is meant for non-visible, internal surfaces, not the outside of a cabinet.
Hot Link Pro does not work "hidden behind a cabinet door", it works great behind a cabinet door "slot". It also works on the back of flat panel displays, behind speaker grills and cabinets. It does not need direct line of site. The Blue LED is separate from the Eye so that the Eye may be hidden while the LED may be mounted in a visible location.
Compatibility:
Hot Link Pro is the most compatible IR repeater available. Works with all IR remote controlled DVRs, Sat Boxes, DVD players, CD players, Xbox, etc. It works with all the new 58Khz carrier based gear like Scientific Atlanta 8300, the new AT and T VIP1200, Hughes, Motorola, HR20, etc. It even extends IR Keyboards and mice.
Only a few devices that use 455Khz carriers will not work. Some Kenwood high-end receivers and a couple of Sony high-end "ES" receivers. And a few older pioneer Elite Receivers.
Many professional installers prefer Hot Link Pro to multi-piece systems because it is broad band, works better with flat panel displays and does not need to be visible like other IR repeaters.
Reliability/Quality:
Hot Link models have been in the field for 15 years with extremely few failures. When something does go wrong, we repaired or replaced units for free. Even when the customer cut or removed or damaged parts. While Hot Link Pro will not work if an emitter is cut off, the warranty is not void if a client splices and extends the emitter for the purposes of running it to a ceiling mounted projector. (Usually with great success.) Total overall failure rate is less than 1/4%.
Rugged Design:
When the emitter wires peel apart they do not damage the wire. It is our specification that the wires not tear the insulation while being separated. Consider the alternative, 7 connectors which reduce reliability, and 7 individually bundled wire sets. The whole product uses about a ¼ of a watt, lowering the risk of damaged components from heat, over time.
Remove-ability of Emitters:
Emitters on Hot Link Pro apply with high-grade 3M thick clear tape that is easily removable and replaceable and does not harm plastics. Place thumb and finger on opposing side corners at the lower part of the tape and peel up emitter and tape together. Or push sideways to break adhesion. Using foam tape as suggested on this forum has 2 other consequences: Heat inside cabinets often causes these tapes to fail especially "removable" tapes. Also heat and age cause some foam tapes to stiffen making removal difficult, possibly scratching the surface of AV equipment. Much research has gone into the tape selected for Hot Link Pro. We offer free replacement tape on our site.
The plasma/LCD compatibility question:
Sometimes the "noise" causing the blue LED to stay on is from another source in the environment like a laptop LCD screen or compact high efficiency florescent lamp.
Hot Link Pro has worked with almost all plasma TVs with the known exception of 60 and 61 inch Plasmas and the Sharp Aquos 37 inch LCD NTSC model. Even though Hot Link works with the Aquos 42 and 45 inch and the smaller Aquos LCDs. The 37-inch NTSC model emits to much IR radiation for most IR repeaters to function properly. Hot Link Pro will work with the IR and RF- noisy Sony XBR series.
The 60 and larger plasma displays will work if an Eye with Y Kit is used with the Hot Link. Recommended Eye mounting procedures will be on our site. Noise indication during warm-up of LCD TVs is easily mitigated. Turn on LCD TV after cool down. While standing to one side so as to not add local reflection, place the Eye on the back of the TV and roll it until the Confirmation LED turns completely off.
Since an IR repeater must be broad band and many of the frequencies that cause noise are very near the remote frequencies, multiple direct frequency filtering is actually less effective than power vector filtering accomplished by mounting the Eye in a hidden location. The energy in the vector of the remote going forward is greater than the vector of the noise of the TV reflecting back toward the TV.
Doors open and not functioning properly:
The Hot Link Pro does work with the doors open as well as closed, unless noise is not mitigated or if the LCD or Plasma TV are sending out IR noise directly to the AV gear and affecting remote performance.
Remote To Eye Distances enhanced:
Hot Link Pro enhances useful distances of remotes. Comments to the contrary are often because of not mitigating noise or misplacement of emitters. In the case of the Scientific Atlanta 8300HD which has poor IR range to start with, distance is often enhanced when 1 to 5 layers of masking tape are placed between the Hot Link Pro emitter and the 8300HD IR receiver eye.
We make every effort to make installation as easy as possible with the recognition that some installs are easier than others and we provide great customer service to help with the trickier installations. Please call us for help at 800-999-8846.
At your service,
Marcus, Microsmith Inc.

X10 POWERMID Remote Control Extender Kit PM5900 Review

X10 POWERMID Remote Control Extender Kit PM5900
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
MY father recently remodelled his home, and had all the electronics hard wired behind the walls. It's a real clean installaltion, however all the equipment (reciever, cable, DVD, CD etc) are all out of infrared range.
After figuring out he needed a universal remote, as well as needing r/f capability, the search was on for his christmas present. I had a lot of trouble finding a universaal remote that would set up easily for him, has well as have the R/F capability.
In the end, i opted for the infrared remote i really wanted, and the x-10 system. the leapfrog system appeared to have a few bad reviews, and i figured spending the extra money might make the difference (only like $10)
Turned out to be a great decision. I was concerned about the system b/c the front of all the components in the media closet are very close to the door. I purchased 2 extra extender eyes (plug into the back of the R/F recieving unit, and can be stuck right on the I/R eye of your component) but i didn't even need them. One pyramid in the closet ssomehow still controls all the componants w/o even being in direct line of sight of the i/r eye on each piece of equipment.
I would reccomend buying an extra transmitter (the pyramid w/o the antenna) as you might want to be able to control from other places once you see how convenient this is. My dad has 2, one in the living room, and one in the kitchen, if he wants to control music while cooking.he'll probably end up with another for the patio outside during the summer months.
overall, highly reccomended product.

Wired Home WHIRR-KJ IR Receiver Keystone Jack Review

Wired Home WHIRR-KJ IR Receiver Keystone Jack

Works well as a zone2 IR receiver in the bathroom/spa for my Yamaha avr in the adjoining utility room behind the home theater. I installed this in a keystone plate along with a network jack and left/right rca jacks going back to the Yamaha so I can either play through any of my analog devices hooked up to the receiver or plug in my ipod or laptop locally in the bathroom and play my music collection or stream audio. I have not had any problem controlling the receiver on any of my other devices. Picks up bounced signals off the walls and ceiling very well, so we don't have to worry about pointing the remote in any particular direction when sitting in the hot tub. This (along with good in ceiling speakers) was a nice inexpensive solution to getting audio into the room without paying for a more expensive speaker distribution or whole house audio configuration. The i/r is wired into a CablesToGo i/r distribution block, which was another good value purchase through Amazon.

Some ppl seem to think that this should be like the 75-100$ remotes... This it is not.
The manual is weak, a bad translation from Chinese with many errors... Big deal - it works.
If you have Windows XP, Vista or 7 (32 and 64 bit) just plug it in and it works. The computer sees it as a keyboard/mouse. A little searching will find the key codes for the 'special' function buttons and you can always use AutohotKey (which is free) to get them to do -whatever- PC task you had in mind.
This is far better (and cheaper) than some of the DIY solutions I've previously used. If you really know your way around Windows then this is for you.

I have a home theater I've been building for a number of years and when I painted the walls and ceiling dark colors my IR universal remote could no longer bounce the signal off the front wall and screen to hit the equipment in a rack behind me. I did quite a bit of research and for the money found the Buffalo Electronics IR solution was what I needed.
There really isn't much to this item as it's simply the power supply required for the control block Buffalo IR-100 IR Receiver.
This system was a piece of cake to install. A friend and I got all the wires run and emitters attached in an hour. I can't believe I waited as long as I did to do this. If you're planning a theater or want to put your components in a closet and need an IR extension solution this is what you want. You can use really long runs (other side of the house) without fear of losing the signal (other solutions have short cable lengths that don't make them very useful).
