Hauppauge 1192 WinTV HVR-1950 External USB HDTV Tuner/Video Recorder Review

This is my second tuner and far exceeds the 'average' tuner I purchased at a local electronics store. Hauppauge provided excellent customer service helping me decide which tuner was best for my computer and my needs. I have a new HP system running Vista 64-bit and wanted a tuner to run with the Media Center already installed. It did not come with a TV tuner. The HVR-1950 model 1192 comes with an external MPEG-2 encoder which doesn't draw resources from the computer. Great for watching TV while working in other programs simultaniously. It also comes with it's own viewing program (WinTV V6) which I find relatively user friendly but I prefer to use Media Center for TV viewiewing, recording, and scheduling. The USB connection makes installation easy. Setup in Media Center was simple and picture quality and sound is as good as fatory installed Hauppauge tuners.
The package also comes with an FM radio antenna, remote control, and IR Blaster to control channel changing on cable or satellite boxes.
My only complaint was over the initial setup. Although the instructions are fairly complete for XP and Vista OS they do not address Vista-64 issues thoroughly. For Vista-64 users only, if you receive a message about "No device attached or no driver installed" even after going through the driver installation, you need to download the driver specfically for Vista 64 bit OS for the HVR-1950. http://www.hauppauge.com/site/support/support_hvr1950.html. I had to hunt this down on Hauppauge website but once that driver is downloaded, setup completed perfectly and installation was complete. It was a little work but well worth the results. I love the tuner and my Media Center!

With the Hauppauge 1192 WinTV HVR-1950 External USB HDTV Tuner/Video Recorder, you can turn your PC into a virtual television and personal video recorder, or PVR. By simply plugging this video recorder into one of your computer's USB ports, you can watch, pause and record live HDTV or cable TV directly on your computer. Watch Analog, Cable and Digital TV on your PC The WinTV HVR-1950 Tuner/Video Recorder lets you watch NTSC analog cable, over the air TV, ATSC digital over the air HDTV, and Clear QAM Digital Cable TV directly on your computer, either in a window or on full screen. Why miss your favorite sitcom or the deciding playoff game just because you have work to do? This unique tuner supports NTSC analog cable, over the air TV, ATSC Digital over the air HDTV, and Clear QAM digital cable TV. NTSC is the analog cable TV standard, and ATSC is the over-the-air digital HDTV standard for North America and typically requires an antenna for reception. Clear QAM digital cable allows you to watch unencrypted HDTV stations from your cable TV provider without a set-top box. The tuner also features a built-in 125 channel cable-ready TV tuner, allowing you to watch Analog TV and Clear QAM Digital TV by connecting to your cable box. For analog cable TV reception, you need an analog cable TV connection. If you have a digital cable set-top box or a satellite box, the WinTV-HVR-1950 can connect via either Composite or S-Video inputs. For ATSC over-the-air digital TV reception, a high-gain antenna is recommended. (To check the ATSC TV broadcasts in your area, go to TitanTV.com and enter your postal code. Note: depending on the strength of your antenna, you might not be able to receive all broadcasts listed at TitanTV.) Schedule and Record your Favorite Show With the on-board MPEG-2 encoder, which allows your PC to run at full speed while recording, the WinTV-HVR-1950 lets you record analog cable TV while allowing your PC to operate at full speed while recording, so you won't sacrifice any performance. Digital TV programs are recorded in their original video quality, so 1080i programs are recorded at 1080i, and so on. With WinTV-Scheduler software installed, you can also turn your PC into a virtual PVR and schedule and record your TV shows automatically. Analog TV recordings typically consume 1.5 GB of disk space per hour using Hauppauge's SoftPVR for Windows XP and Media Center. High-definition TV recordings typically consume 5 GB of disk space per hour. Other features include a Dolby-TV stereo decoder for Dolby-quality audio, and a remote control that lets you control satellite and TV set top boxes for the ultimate in convenience. The WinTV-HVR-1950 is compatible with Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows Media Center. What's in the Box WinTV-HVR-1950 USB 2.0 External Box, USB cable, Hauppauge Remote Control (with batteries), IR blaster cable, WinTV installation and utilities software CD-ROM, Ulead DVD Movie Factory Software on CD, and quick installation guide.

This keyboard stopped working in less than 1 month after I received it. I tried to return it or contact the seller but after an hour of going around & around on Amazon's website, I could not make any headway. When I tried to view my recent purchses, the website states that there aren't any since 2008. - ? Then I got an email to rate this product that stated it ws purchased on 10/06/2010. - ? I don't really know if I am more disgusted with a keyboard that quit working in less than a month or with Amazon's confusing website.

Targus PAUM30U Notebook Wireless Presenter Review

Targus PAUM30U Notebook Wireless Presenter

Targus was one of the first to release the wirelss optical mouse without the huge base to lug around. Kensington has released one recently but it's pricey. I placed my NiMh batteries in here (highly recommended) and it works great so far! It's small and compact but a bit heavier than most mice because of batteries. I wouldn't say movement is perfect, but satisfactory. The scroll wheel is fine.
The mouse I had before was Logitech's popular blue optical wheel mouse. Targus's mini optical wireless mouse is great for laptop users but it isn't the smoothest mouse in the world. It's smooth normally but if you leave it alone for a few minutes and pick it up again it has to adjust and gets jerky but goes smooth again. If you find it for less than $ I'd get it.

Garmin nüvi 755/755T 4.3 Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic Review

Garmin nüvi 755/755T 4.3 Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, as for another review: CERTAIN models of this specific GPS were recalled. All who purchased were made aware of the battery recall and given a website and phone number to contact. You entered the code on the back of your device to find out if it was one of the devices effected. Ours was not.
Onto the actual review!
I bought this as our very first GPS back in April 2010. To this day my husband and I look at each other with contentment and pat ourselves on the back for this purchase. The screen is bright and easy to use. My husband loves playing music on it through our in car radio! He has hundreds of MP3s on the device which he can sort through by genre, alphabetical order, musician, etc. or just choose to play at random. (Considering our in car CD player just died, this is especially nice). It's nice that you can choose for all sound to be played through your car stereo, or to be played through the GPS speakers.
The look-up is fast! We'll often be driving around and think, hey let's stop somewhere to eat. We touch the screen for points of interest, dining, and then can select what type of eating we're craving from there (or just search all). The list is populated quickly and only begins to lag when finding locations over 30 miles away. From the locations list, it shows you the name of the location, the address, and even a phone number so you can grab your cell phone and make a call ahead reservation on the fly.
From the "Where To?" screen, what I especially love, is a recent searches folder. We often forget to write down addresses and the recent searches holds them for quite a while.
On days when you have lots of errands, you can set the GPS to plot a course through all of your stops. At any time you can remove one of the stops or even add another.
When steering off course, this GPS will sometimes recalculate your path speedily but, about 30% of the time, hiccups for a moment before redirecting you. Most, if not all, GPS systems seem to have this problem with a less than instant re-routing function.
The battery life is decent and set-up is a breeze. The stand it includes to attach to your windshield is secure and has never fallen down on us, despite my sometimes trying to tug the GPS out and failing. You have to press in a button on the bottom and pull the GPS out toward you to remove it from the stand. My husband is a one handed master at this but I fumble a bit.
As for long road trips with this Garmin, we've gone on plenty of those. One of my favorite features is that when you need to get into (or avoid) a specific lane on the highway to take an exit, a zoomed in picture of the road will appear (the one you see in the screen shot for this product on Amazon) reminding you exactly where you need to be.
In all this time, we have only lost complete signal twice during a road trip and both times the signal was reacquired shortly.
I love my GPS and I am never tempted to upgrade (or downgrade) from the model I chose. The size is perfect, the features are just what we need, and it's fast and easy to use. When I bought this from Amazon it was on a great sale.
So, after this glowing review, why the four stars out of five? Well, certain features, like the free traffic feature, don't work exactly as advertised. In fact, I have never seen the traffic updates feature in motion before and am still hunting for it.

Universal Remote Control MX-600 Home Theater Master 10-Device IR/RF Remote and MRF-100 Base Station Review

Average Reviews:

This is a great solution to a common problem, I have a flat screen LCD and wanted to hide all the components in my closet. In order to do this, you need a IR/RF converter, I looked an many products and hesitantly settled on this one. I was concerned it would be too difficult to program. I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to program my DVD, DirecTV and TV in one night with very little reading of the manual. The IF blaster does not need to be pointed at the components either, mine sits on top of my DirecTV box and works great with no delay. I rarely write reviews but felt a sense of obligation since I read so many reviews before I bought my DVD and sound system. I hope this is helpful.

Audiovox XMCK-10A XM Xpress Satellite Radio Car Kit Review

Audiovox XMCK-10A XM Xpress Satellite Radio Car Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Right from the moment I plugged the unit into the cigarette lighter of the car (parked inside the garage with the doors shut) I was impressed the reception. I upgraded from the original Roady and was taken back with the excellent performance of this unit. I regularly make a trip from Chicago to Indianapolis, and with the old Roady I experienced several dead sites out in the country. With the new unit, no dead sites what-so-ever!!. (Not to say they don't exist)
PROS::::
* Awesome Satellite Reception
* Ability to Aim Antenna when hooked to home docking station
* FM Transmitter Performance is much increased over the original FM transmitters. (The old FM transmitters lacked fidelity.) The sound with this FM transmitter is strong, bass is deep and the highs are clear and crisp.
o This transmitter transmits through the external satellite antenna outside the car (as opposed to through the cigarette lighter adapter)
o Strong enough to block out fairly strong nearby FM stations.
o Can set the frequency to anything between 88.1 and 107.9
 Set the frequency by changing the dial
* The docking station has an auxiliary input and output. Imagine all of the useful things you can plug in there, like mp3 players or portable TVs /DVD/ Computer audio
* The Display is CRISP, CLEAR, and Easy to read day or night. The default is white background with black lettering. It is very easy to read, day or night.
* Has a dial for channel and option selection
* Size and weight are about half the size of that of the original Roady.
* Comes with everything you could need to hook it up in a car.
* The easy dock makes it easy to switch between car and house, just unplug it and go.
CONS:::::
* The only real con is that the buttons are hard to see at night. (Although after you initially get it setup, you shouldn't have to mess around with the buttons to much. The menu button is right in the middle. After you initially get set up that will probably be the only button you use. Lets face it, if you had the old Roady, then after a while you managed to work that thing in the dark with ease.
OVERALL:::::::
I highly recommend this product. I picked one up for $49 after rebates and the FM transmitter alone that comes with it is worth every bit of $49. Previously I had paid $40 for a Belkin TuneCast..........and couldn't transmit a signal across the room yet alone from inside the garage with the door shut.
The has performed well for me so far and has far exceeded my expectations at every turn
Take a look at the manual(see link below) to get an idea of how clear the screen is. (Although the manual does not do the unit justice)

Liftmaster 41A5034 Garage Door Opener Safety Beam Kit Review

Liftmaster 41A5034 Garage Door Opener Safety Beam Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This unit was easy to install and fixed my old craftsman garage door opener model 139.53962SRT.
I learned a few tricks in the process
These are some general troubleshooting steps:
1.- Check the wiring first. Be sure wires has not been damaged. With ohm meter check for open circuit or short circuit.
2.-Disconnect the receiver and sender units. They both connect to the same terminals. Terminals 2 and 3 in my opener. Be sure to label the wires to be able to reconnect them later. Measure the voltage in the terminals. It should be around 6 volts DC. Terminal 2 negative. Terminal 3 positive. If there is no voltage the control card in the opener is defective. This kit will not help in that case.
3.- Reconnect the sender unit first. Its LED light should come on. If it does not, the sender is defective. Replace the sender.
4.- If the sender LED comes on, connect the receiver unit. The LED light comes on when it detects infrared light. Point the sender to the receiver. The receiver LED light should come on. If it does not try with a TV remote. TV remotes emit infrared light also. Point any TV remote to the receiver unit and press any button. The LED light in the receiver should light up. If it does not. The receiver is defective.
This kit includes a receiver unit, a sender unit and hardware to install.

Wireless Security Camera System (BUILT-IN DVR Receiver) Infrared Surveillance (4) Quad View USB Quad Display 2.4ghz Night Vision Real Time Color
Average Reviews:

Right out of the box one of the cameras didn't work. The other camera's would not work if they were in direct sunlight because of the infra red light from the sun so i could not put any camera near a window or door. You also cannot mount the cameras in any other position that flat because the housing cannot rotate or turn. If you try and mount them on a wall or ceiling your images will record upside down or sideways.
I emailed the seller 3X about this to see about returning it and in 4 days they could not bother to respond. I had to file an A2Z claim with Amazon and then they finally responded after about two weeks. After returning the product it still took another 2 weeks to get a credit. I never did get refunded for shipping like i was told i would either, Just the price of the crappy camera system. I was very disappointed all the way around.

Phase Linear UV8020 MP3/WMA/USB/SD Card/DVD Receiver with 7 Inch Screen (Black) Review

Phase Linear UV8020 MP3/WMA/USB/SD Card/DVD Receiver with 7 Inch Screen (Black)
Average Reviews:

I was a little apprehensive to buy one of these because of the low price and the myriad of features that it performed. But I went ahead and bought one. I bought a 3 yr warranty from squaretrade just in case it broke. I was especially concerned with the motorized screen which slides down when you need to insert or remove a DVD,CD, or SD card. Once the package actually arrived the unit felt very nice and seemed to be built solidly. I installed this myself in my Lexus. It has 5 preamp RCA outputs which includes a subwoofer output. It also has 2 RCA video outs and 1 RCA video input for a backup camera. It also comes with a remote (feels a little cheap but works adequately). I was a little diappointed with the front AUX input as it is smaller than a standard headphone jack and you have to use a nonstandard cable (they provide 1 cable for audio only and 1 for video/audio). If your looking for Bluetoooth, Navigation, or Satellite ready, look elsewhwere.
Pros:
Lots of features. It also seems to have excellent laser quality as it plays many of my CD's which are so scratched up they will not play in any other player I own. You can play music (not video) from an SD card. In fact if you have pictures on an SD card you can play them in a slideshow. DVD playback works as it should and it has an auto resume feature so even once you shut off the car it will return to the point in the movie you were at. The unit sounds good with no hum or high pitch whine linked to engine rpm like you experience with some units. The motorized screen works well and feels solid and strong. The radio receiver seems to pick up more stations than my factory radio did.
Cons:
I wish it had some visualizations while you were listening to music. For instance even a bouncing EQ or ANY animation. Instead while listening to CD's it does have a graphic, but nothing more. It seems a shame to waste that beautiful 7" screen. Several of the features can only be accessed via the remote. This could be a problem if you lose it or break it. Included instructions were lacking, however most people should be able to use it without any instructions needed. It only supports regular SD cards, so no 4GB or larger cards will work. It simply says SD card error if you try. The screen does seem to get washed out when the sunlight hits it directly. (however pretty much ALL LCD screens do this).
UPDATE:
I've had this unit for around six months now with zero problems.

5GHz Digital Wireless Video Sender DMA3000T&R Review

5GHz Digital Wireless Video Sender DMA3000TandR
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using a wireless video sender to share a cable box between two TV's for 10 years. My old one recently started not working very well with microwaves ovens and blue tooth devices.
So I went on a quest to find a new one that would be crystal clear.
In doing research I found that older wireless phones, bluetooth devices and microwaves use a frequency around 2 to 4 GHz. Newer phone technology now uses 6.0 GHz. These units use 5 GHz and use what they call WIVI technology.
They work extremely well, much better than my old ones. No fuzzy pictures or weak signal strength lines. The picture is clear and sharp and sound it great.
I have the transmitter unit on my Comcast DVR on a downstairs TV. I have the sender in a bedroom, one floor higher. This unit has a remote extender built in, so an extra comcast remote works the box downstairs from the bedroom upstairs. I works so well, now I want an extra receiver unit to go to another TV.
This unit is well worth the money and in the long run, saves you cable box fees.

Avertv Hybrid Volar Max TV Tuner Kit for Windows MTVHVMXSK Review

Avertv Hybrid Volar Max TV Tuner Kit for Windows MTVHVMXSK
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I've been using Media Center on a WinXP tower since 2004. My HP unit came with a built in tuner which could only receive analog channels and the 2004 version of MC that came with it only supported standard def TV. As the years passed, I was eagerly anticipating for a release of Media center that supported HD programming. Once that happened on Windows 7 (and perhaps Vista), I needed to find a tuner card that would work with it.
Over the years I would check release info on new products and read about one sad experience after another regarding the failure of available HD tuner cards on the market and issues regarding firmware, drivers, configuration settings, etc.
Knowing that most new technology needs a few years to get the bugs out, I didn't buy and waited. The last few months had me itching to try and finally set up a HTPC (Home Theater PC) system. When it comes to video quality, my assumption was that I'd get better performance from a PCI internal tuner card in a tower. Thing is, I don't have a new Windows tower but I do have an inexpensive netbook running Windows 7 Home Premium. As there's no way to install an internal tuner card I'm limited to using an external USB tuner. After reading the reviews on Amazon, I decided the Volar Max was my best bet (and at $55 I figured I could only go so wrong).
I remember going through error and configuration issues with Vista and XP in the past, the idea that this little flashdrive-sized gizmo was going to allow me to tune in analog channels, digital channels as well as actual hi res HD seemed suspect at the very least. I was dreading the thought of experiencing the usual whole night investment of getting a new peripheral up and running on Windows only to have it not work well.
I plugged the Avertv in the USB slot and it found & installed its driver automatically and quickly. It then gave me the option of installing it's own tuner/viewer software. I declined in favor of Media Center.
Now I can't say how this thing works with any other OS's but, with Windows 7 Home Premium, the Avertv Volar Max blew my mind. My laptop is connected to an LCDTV- I fired up Media Center, which found the Avertv right away. I selected it, went through the channel scan (like any tv) and was watching great quality analog & digital HD tv within minutes. It WORKED! And not only that, it worked without my having to do any manual installations or configurations. Windows media center rocks (and IMHO blows away Apple in this particular area). The picture and sound seems as good as any HDTV tuner I've seen built into HD televisions. I hooked up my HP Media Center IR remote and can now flip through channels, set DVR recordings, play music, etc. from my couch.
Maybe this shows my age, but I thought any kind of decent resolution tuner hardware needed to be relatively big in size. That this tiny unit does so much, so well and so easily is immensely impressive.
The age of HTPC's is definitely here.

This piece works once you get it active, but it has very picky antenna issues getting it set up. Also, if you want to control it RS-232 with Crestron, you'll likely need to buy a 3rd party module - the partner mod. doesn't work very well. After some struggles we've gotten it working quite reliably, but should be easier.

I'm sure you understand that the way these things work is that the RF10, 20 or 30 remote sends an RF signal that is picked up by the PowerBlaster. It blasts out a very strong, very wide beam of IR that can bounce around and operate your IR-controllable equipment. It also has these little plug in flashers that you can tape to your equipment.
You might be scared off by the one reviewer who said he taped the little plug-in flashers onto his equipment items' IR windows. Of course, if you do that, the remote that came with your equipment will be blocked. The good news is that I've been using PowerBlasters for years and never had to do that. In all but one case, I could just put a PowerBlaster BESIDE the equipment, and it would generate enough IR to bounce off virtually anything in front of the equipment and do its job. I've had it bouncing off glass, a curtain, a door, and even a wall that's 14 feet across a room. Talk about ease of installation! All you do is plug these things in and they start working.
I'm not saying a single PowerBlaster is going to completely flood a large room or bounce IR around corners or whatever. It will normally work within a closet or cabinet or enclosed part of an entertainment center or with one bounce off a wall without a problem.
I've had situations in which these things were too good. I've got a home theater upstairs and a regular flat-panel in the den, and both are set up with URC RF remotes. My bride was turning on and programing the cable DVR box downstairs, and the PowerBlaster upstairs was doing the same to the box upstairs. For awhile, I couldn't figure out why All My Children kept showing up on recorded shows upstairs! My solution to this was to plug the two PowerBlasters upstairs into a switched outlet on the receiver. That way, they would be out of commission until I turned on the receiver, which I normally do manually anyway. Now the recorded Soaps stay downstairs where they belong. I'm happy to say that the IR will not go through curtains. If it did, I'd have another conflict like that one.
I should explain why I needed two PowerBlasters for the upstairs theater. I have one on the equipment rack behind the curtain. I have another sitting under the screen facing back toward the projector. The projector has a box that moves a lens back and forth in front of the projector. The box is only controllable by an IR remote. The sensor in the box is recessed, so I needed to get IR from the front of the room. This was the one time that a wall bounce wouldn't do the job. I tried bouncing off the screen in front of the projector, and it didn't work. I have to say however that the little box in question is pretty insensitive, even to its own remote.
So there it is. I'm a great believer in the URC system. I've got much more expensive remotes that I don't use, because The URCs are so reliable.

I have four remotes and four blasters in play right now, and I'm about to expand again. I'm going to use them to control the theater lighting, which is already set up with z-wave technology. No, these particular URC devices aren't z-wave compatible, but I can buy an IR remote for my Lutron z-wave system, use it to teach a URC RF-30, and let the PowerBlaster take it to the Lutron IR sensor.
I can't imagine that you'll be disappointed with the PowerBlasters. They are a solid capability at an outstanding price.

You will not be able to use this system outdoors unless you have electrical outlets close by. The reception to my receiver is spottie at best with cameras in 40 foot range of the receiver. The color yeild only B&W thus far. Reception fade away at night.
The connections on the cameras to power supply should be much longer to keep out of weather for outdoor use.
Receiver has four antenna that have limited movement that may contribute to issues--can only go left or right.
Camera do not seem to be geared to any one channel
I purcased a new receiver from another vendor that has eight channels that rove or stay static color is great, reception is more constant.
I can not use the usb and record to PC as desired.
Will try to find a work around to solve this issue.
Do not wait as I did to have outlets & cameras installed by an electrician before testing out cameras--- my mistake and loss.
I'm sure this my be a good system in doors with limited distance and interferance.

That is so upsetting. It looks like the E-600 has the IR sensor, however this remote has no effect whatsoever. Please anyone confirm.
Otherwise, remote itself looks just like the real thing, but does not work for me.
