Marantz SR8002 Surround Receiver Review

Marantz SR8002 Surround Receiver

After 9 years, it was time to upgrade my former top-of-the-line Sony ES receiver (STR-DA 777ES) to take advantage of improved audio and high-definition video switching. After reading all the professional reviews, I settled on the Marantz SR8002. Three weeks after an extensive configuration and testing, I must say that I am pleased overall with my choice. However, several surprising configuration limitations keep me from giving it a full-on 5-star review.
Let me preface my review by stating that my home theater / audio configuration is on the higher-end of the scale: 3 KEF Reference speakers for the front 3 channels, Boston Acoustics rear surrounds and subwoofer, Sony ES SACD player (and yes, I have an SACD collection!), Bang & Olfusen turntable, Sony reference DVD player, AppleTV, Roku music server, JVC SVHS VCR, Mitsubishi HDTV monitor.
My first priority was in upgrading the audio quality, and I must say that in this respect, the Marantz SR8002 far exceeded my expectations. As a 7.1 channel amplifier, there are 7 x 125watt channels available, native decoding of the latest lossless HD digital audio on BluRay (DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD), Audyssey microphone and room equilazation, and THX Select 2 certification. For the ultimate audio experience, the Marantz SR8002 offers two "Pure Direct" modes - the first one bypasses the equalization and surround circuits, the second mode completely disables all video and display logic for even shorter audio output path. The SR8002 also provides a toroidal power transformer for extra headroom when needed, and in my setup the audio performance is dramatic.
I chose not to expand my current 5.1 speaker configuration to 7.1 channel. In this setup, the SR8002 gives you the option of taking the two unused channels and configuring them for a second amplified room/zone, or bi-amplification of your front speakers. I chose the latter, as my KEF Reference speakers support bi-amplified wiring, providing 250 watts per channel into Left and Right channels. Let me tell you - the pure stereo performance in this configuration will blow your socks off! Friends could not believe the sound in our fairly large family room was from 2-speakers only. And, the multi-channel modes (especially NEO6: Music) are quite outstanding even with a 2-channel source. Quite simply, the audio performance of the SR8002 is "7-star" on a 5-star scale.
My second priority was in upgrading to a receiver capable of decoding the high-resolution audio of BluRay, while providing high definition video switching (via HDMI and component). In this respect the receiver delivers, but with some surprising limitations. On paper, the Marantz SR8002 offers more connectors and options than you would ever need. You have 4 HDMI 1.3 connections + 2 HDMI 1.3 outputs (good!), 4 component HD connections + 2 component HD outputs (good!), 4 TOSlink digital audio (including front), 3 coax digital audio, and a plethora of S-video, composite video, and analog audio inputs.
But in reality, there are serious limitations...
First of all, it is inexcusable for a receiver of this cost to be missing a phonograph input. Yes, for $50 you can buy a phono preamp that gives you good performance and doesn't have the A/C hum of your $25 Radio Shack unit. But, come on.
Secondly, and more discouraging, despite the plethora of connections you only have 8 discrete settings that can be assigned. (The AM/FM tuner is another, nonassignable input, as is the optional XM radio input). This means that even if you could connect to all of the analog + digital inputs available you can only use 8 of them! This is quite a surprising and serious limitation. Even my Sony ES from 1999 had 12 discrete inputs!
The on-screen receiver setup lets you assign specific HDMI, component, and digital audio for your 8 choices. Each input can also be renamed. But you cannot use a single digital input for more than one setting. And you cannot reassign the analog video (S-Video/Composite) or analog audio inputs.
An example of this strange limitation is the analog input of the "AUX2" input also happens to be used as the Left and Right input channels for the 7.1 input. I had to reconfigure my setup to reassign the "AUX2" input to the digital CD input, which I also connected to the 5.1 (SACD) output from my CD player. Because there are only 8 input settings, I had to assign the "AUX1" (front) input to the digital audio and video inputs from my AppleTV. This means that the front AUX1 inputs are completely unusable, since all 8 inputs were assigned from rear input sources.
Another big surprise was the subwoofer speaker setting. By default, it is set to "mix"...all bass output is diverted to the subwoofer at an assignable crossover frequency. This works well for (and is recommended for) THX and multi-channel video sources. But strangely in "mix" setting, the SR8002 does NOT output the bass to the subwoofer for two-channel analog inputs AND it does not output the low frequencies to the front speakers. I spent about 3 hours trying to figure out why my new (required) phonograph preamp sounded so terrible before I discovered this problem. Setting the subwoofer to "BOTH" properly sends full-range audio to the front speakers. AND, it enables the subwoofer for the simulated modes such as NEO6. Not only does this not make sense, it is not documented anywhere in the manual.
There are other annoyances:
- FM / AM radio reception is below average. I was looking forward to trying the "HD radio" capability, but the tuner reception is so bad that it can never get a strong enough signal to use any of the HD radio broadcasts in my area. Compared with my 1999 Sony ES receiver using the same antenna configuration I can only tune half of the stations. My CLOCK RADIO gets much better radio reception than this $2000 receiver!
- the front of the receiver has two large controls for Source and Volume - each one has a bright blue LED indicator that does NOT move with the control. So, while you might think that the volume indicator would indicate the volume level it doesn't. The bright blue indicators are always at 12-o clock position. And the front input control does not have a positive feedback to let you know you have switched inputs.
- the remote control button/display backlight is ONLY activated when you press one of the two buttons on the bottom of the remote
- the remote does not offer discrete settings for all surround modes or settings (although thankfully there are discrete power on/off codes)
- the onscreen display is very primitive (think 1982 Apple ][+ 40x24 characters)
In summary, despite the outstanding audio performance of the Marantz SR8002 (once you figure out the subwoofer and other settings!), I cannot give this a full 5-star rating because of the serious limitations and limited inputs.

The device seems to work reasonably well if you play around to position it. One big problem I encountered - the MFR100B device isn't addressable. So if you have two rooms on the same floor, each with its own compatible remote and base station, you may see cross-talk where the remote in one room changes the TV in the other room. You'll need the MFR350 or MFR260 devices which have "addressable" base stations to assign a channel to a single remote.

Onkyo TX-NR906 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) Review

Onkyo TX-NR906 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Simply amazing! I must say, this has to be one of the most sophisticated pieces of electronic equipment that I've ever owned. I don't even know where to begin. Did I mention this thing is amazing?
I was running a Bose Lifestyle 48 prior to this, but when I finally decided to make the most of HDMI connections, I shelved the Bose and stepped up to the ONKYO. What a breath of fresh air! There are so many features of the TX-NR906 that I like. Starting with the remote control--I'm sure it's common practice nowadays for receiver remotes to be fairly smart, but this guy is really bright. I've managed to teach it all the commands from my three main remote controls (TV, BD & CD Players), more or less, just by pointing the controllers at each other and clicking. I'm referring to commands that aren't usually part of a universal controller's arsenal. The large number of connection choices are really coming in handy, as well. I'm maxing out the HDMI inputs and have one of the two outputs connected to my TV. There's a ton of digital audio options as well. The front panel offers a number of connection choices, including a USB port for playing MP3s.
Another aspect of this receiver that I really like is the fact that this system not only sounds phenomenal when playing movies, but sounds equally as incredible playing CDs or listening to music from my PC. With previous systems it always seemed like one was better than the other, but with the TX-NR906, I really feels like I'm getting audiophile quality sound from all components. Oh yeah, did I mention? HD FM radio sounds phenomenal! I don't have XM or Sirius yet, but that's on the short list of near term upgrades. There's an antennae connection for both.
This receiver is the hub of my home theater. Putting things in perspective, my setup includes a Samsung LN46A750 46-Inch 1080p DLNA LCD HDTV with RED Touch of Color, Panasonic DMP-BD30K 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player, a Sony 5-Disc Carousel CD Player, Dell XPS Pentium D 3.0 GHz/3.0 GB RAM/VisionTek Radeon HD4850 512MB GDDR3 PCI Express Graphics Card, Playstation 3 80GB, Motorola digital cable box/DVR , and Aperion Audio's Intimus 5T Hybrid HD speaker system. All this, combined with the TX-NR906, really sounds and looks incredible. I'm utilizing HDMI for video on all components. I'm also supplementing the digital cable box's audio with a coaxial cable. Similarly, I'm augmenting the BD Player's audio by connecting audio cables via the multichannel jacks.
I bought the TX-NR906 in October 2008 and so far, I haven't found anything I dislike. The only minor thing I will point out is with the remote control. When you are teaching it commands from your other remotes, you might have to try it a couple of times. At first, I thought that some of the commands weren't going to be able to be taught, but I stuck with it and eventually was able to teach it all commands. No big deal, just don't give up if it doesn't work right away.
Whether you're watching HD TV, listening to your favorite music, watching the latest release on Blu-Ray, or playing the hottest shooter on your PC or PS3--if you have the money, this receiver is the perfect addition to any home theater.

Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro USB Audio System with THX SB1095 Review

Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro USB Audio System with THX SB1095

I purchased the Soundblaster X-Fi to replace the soundcard on my laptop which had recently begun to degrade. My laptop is connected to my stereo system and I have very high standards for sound quality.
The initial setup was easy on Windows 7 - 64bit(simply plug-in via USB). The included installation CD installed all the drivers and applications (it took about 45 minutes including updates).
Once installed the sound card exceeded my expectations. The sound is pristine. My music files have never sounded so good. The included equalizer works perfectly and works for all types of applications, e.g., itunes, steaming music, etc. There's all kinds of additional software for adjusting video sound, e.g., dolby, THX which I haven't experimented with yet.
I highly recommend this product - simple to install, reasonably priced, and produces beautiful sound.

Marantz SR6003 Audio Video Receiver Review

Marantz SR6003 Audio Video Receiver

I've had the 6003 for over a month now and it has totally impressed me. All I want to do is throw in all my hddvd's, blu-rays and sacd's in order to hear the amazing sound they produce with this receiver. Dolby TrueHD, DTS Master, and any of the uncompressed audio sound frickin' spectacular. I did some switching between these and compressed and it is amazing how open and engulfing the sound of the lossless codecs are compared to the legacy formats.
Music has never sounded better through my Energy Reference Connoisseur 50's either. Marantz has this nailed. The sound is incredibly smooth from the deepest bottom end to the very top of the crispest highs. I was listening to a master recording of Muddy Waters on gold cd and it was spectacular. It's almost as if the sound was beyond the speakers to the point where they were non-existent and all that was left was the music. Even my brother was impressed and this coming from a guy who runs an Ayre cd player, McIntosh pre-amp, Bryston amp and Veritas speakers. He said, and I quote, "It's amazing how far receivers have come". He went on to mention that this is probably part of a trickle down effect from Marantz's Reference Series audio line as he mentioned they have been getting some praise from the audiophile sector.
So if anyone is looking for what in my opinion is the best sounding receiver in this price range (or even several hundred above), I would have to say this is it. It SEVERELY outperforms my outgoing Denon 3805, and put to shame the Pioneer Elite sc-05 for sound quality according to my ears. No doubt the Best Bang for the buck.

Antec 30126 VERIS Premier Multimedia Station Review

Antec 30126 VERIS Premier Multimedia Station
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
EDIT: GO TAKE A LOOK AT THE ACTUAL PICTURES NOT THE PHOTO-SHOPPED ONES ANTEC MADE OF THE PRODUCT I INCLUDED ON THE AMAZONE PAGE.
FIRST: Take a look at the picture on Amazon's site for this item, On Antec's site, and on Buy.com's site. Looks great right?? Nice VFD display...(just like on the Antec Elite model) NOPE!!! NOPE!!! NOPE!!! Sure, read the fine print for the Premier model (this model) it's an LCD display. BUT NOT JUST ANY LCD DISPLAY IT'S A TINY / CROPPED \ WASHED OUT LCD DISPLY. Why does this matter? Well I expected a display was relatively close to what Antec, Amazon, and Buy.com all advertise. That display Looks Awesome!! (BTW the Display that the ANTEC ELITE (the MODEL BELOW THIS HAS).
The actual display has a very narrow angle before it begins distorting (like some LCD monitors do. So unless you are looking dead on to 10-15 degrees to the left or right. This thing is going to look WASHED out & UGLY at 45 degrees i can see all the hidden buttons around the display and the display looks almost WHITE, the display of text at that point is nearly un-readable.
Just a FLUKE with my model (NOPE!!!) Yes you can make minimal contrast adjustments but it only allows you to go from unacceptable to down right terrible! even dead on looks washed out & NOTHING, REPEAT NOTHING LIKE THE PICTURES! =============
Next issue, this unit couples or attaches inline with the Power supplies 20/24 pin main power motherboard connection. What's the problem with that? Well unlike the cable from the power supply which has solid construction and the pins don't move around / secured pins, this coupler does not, it's my only complaint with the initial setup. So it can make the insertion like attempting to herd barn cats. Think about a LOOSE pinned molex connector but instead of 4 loose pins it's 6 x that, I required two small needle nose players to get the connections to mate properly. Without that it pushed the pins out the wrong way not making a proper connection & therefore couldn't snap lock the units together. (YMMV)...
The rest of the hardware installation was straight forward. OTHER than don't bother installing the drivers off the tiny CD. Go to Antec's site & download everything from there. It MAKE sure to go through the settings & select for it to automatically check for updates, if not selected by default. I had to restart before I could get it to go out & check and YES, there are additional updates even after installing the latest offering from Antec (As of 1-2010).
[[AT THIS POINT I WOULD HAVE BEEN FAR HAPPIER HAVING BOUGHT THE ANTEC ELITE MODEL]] The Display was supposed to be the pizazz the cache' of this item. The wow factor & i'm super BUMMED by how plain & ugly it is. See that EQ picture that they show... NOPE!! Sure there is an EQ, but it looks nothing like that!!!!
A positive: The Remote control's ability to turn on & off my PC awesome!
But lets get back to the LCD screen for a bit. It's got so many areas outside of the center of the screen that light up with various features that you end up subtracting 1" off the left & right side of the screen and 1/2" of both the top & bottom of the screen. [[[LOOKS NOTHING LIKE THE PICTURE THEY SHOW!!!) It's LITERALLY leaves a tiny 3" display for the scrolling or actual display of the programmable text. And while you can make SOME Font & Size adjustments. There are Some LONG words that Can't be fully displayed all at once as it tracks across the screen even at tiny TEXT SIZE that's RIDICULOUS. You know how hard it is to read something like that? If you buy this (YOU WILL!)
AND - YES the Image Ghosts like CRAZY. The Freaking ms response rate must be up in the 30ms range it's so bad & very annoying. Then take a small news blurb.. Sure you can sign up for Google, yahoo, NYtimes etc. like an RSS feed WOW right? Well what I can read by simply looking at the news displayed by the software You can read it right on the desktop when i bring that part of the included software up in say 4 seconds, but it takes 1 - 2 minutes to scroll across the tiny LCD screen. I don't know about you, but I don't have 15 minutes to read 8-10 news headlines. That even a 3rd grader could make out on the desktop in about 45 seconds... SCROLLING SPEED + AWFUL GHOSTING = FAIL!!
TINY NOT USING THE MAJORITY BUT MAYBE 2/3rds of an already tiny display = FAILED.
MAX RATE OF SCROLL THAT YOU CAN STILL READ W/O GHOSTING MAKING IT UN-READABLE FAIL!! FAIL! FAIL! Washed out color, contrast adjustment can not go DARK without making the Text go black. So if you want to see the text... that's why we got it to be able to see the display the contrast has to be set so that the screen is way too light. =====================
OK I have the software installed. I start selecting closest city for temperature and weather ( a kewl feature right? Get LCD scroll text of the weather with a city nearby. NOPE!!! NOPE!! It allows for that ONLY MAJOR CITIES. NEW YORK, CHICAGO, ENGLAND (LOL) and just a Tiny few others. Well WTF? The weather is different 2 hours away from me let alone 10 hours to chicago... FEATURE = FAIL! (unless you live in those handful of cities). Dig around some more & now another Desktop Widget for a clock / weather(closest city (independent of the first whether display this is ONLY FOR THE DESKTOP) it finds or allows from my city is now 3 hours away). OF COURSE that city CANNOT be displayed on the LCD screen just your normal desktop monitor's screen. And again only includes major & sub major cities .... Minneapolis MN, Omaha NE, Madison WI, size cities etc. No third or fourth tier cities (like Apple, Google, Windows all allow). FEATURE = FAIL! It does me no good that far away.
No listing on Antec's site for supported TV Tuner Cards. I took a chance so far I can tell you that they DO NOT WORK or recognize any of the ATI All-In-Wonder Graphic / TV Tuner Card under XP (with properly installed Analog drivers Catalyst 6.2 & before & ATI's MMC 9.08 and before). I may also install another boot & try the crappy digital drivers for the A-I-W too.

I have some hardware encoded cards I will try next (like the TV Wonder 650) but a simple list of Supported TV Tuner cards would have been helpful. (BAD ON ME FOR NOT DEMANDING THAT FROM ANTEC FIRST A buyer should always be diligent.
However, this item was on sale from [...] for $29.99 each i saw the photo read what it came with and thought WOW!! (NOW I KNOW WHY it was only $29.99!) and so i jumped in with NO time to wait for responses or I'd likely miss "the deal" ROFL at that price.
The Media Center experience from Imon LOOKS REALLY COOL (when i first started it up) It looks like a movie theater going dark about to start a movie). EXCEPT it won't find any of my files? I mean not only does the structure of the setup menus need to be reworked but they go off in loops & dead ends very annoying!
I'm no spring chicken with Media Centers.
I've used and am currently using six different main-media-Centers on several PCs and dual & triple booted systems. They are the following - XP MCE 2005, Vista Media Center, Windows 7 Media Center, ATI's Multimedia Center, and Cyberlink's Power Cinema, and Snapstream's Beyond TV) they are relatively simple and straight forward, but the IMON software suite that comes with this is NOT? I will keep at it but while the front end "looks awesome" fat lot of good that does if it won't play TV (another card may correct that), won't find & display pictures and Videos.
There are MULTIPLE CLICKS confusing dead ends GRRR things that don't belong there... The automatic searches found/detected nothing. Manual setup pointing to the files doesn't seem to be any different. It doesn't set up or find my pictures, my videos, or my A-I-W

Denon AVR2310CI 7.1-Channel Multi-Zone Home Theater Receiver with 1080p HDMI Connectivity Review

Denon AVR2310CI 7.1-Channel Multi-Zone Home Theater Receiver with 1080p HDMI Connectivity
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I looked at all the brands and settled on Denon because they offer a very complete set of features for the money. This model is basically identical to the Denon AVR-890 model sold in big box stores except it has some extra features that are useful for custom installations (if you have your HT installer do it for you) and has two remotes instead of one on the 890
What I liked about this model over many of the competitors:
- Audyssey MultEQ is an advanced auto setup system which adjusts all the settings for your speakers. You plug in the included microphone, it outputs test tones and calculates the optimum settings for you. It takes measurements over 6 positions to ensure that the calibration settings work well over the whole listening area. Audyssey (in my opinion) is a more sophisticated system than what you would find in the competitors like Pioneer and Yamaha. Denon implements the complete set of Audyssey MultEQ features, shows you the resulting settings, and permits you to tweak the settings afterwards even.
- Audyssey Dynamic EQ - This is a GREAT feature. It's not unlike the Dolby Volume feature offered on other brands. What it does is it makes the sound more natural when you have the volume control lower than the reference standard (the volume the studio used for their reference). When you listen at low volumes, the human ear becomes less sensitive to certain tonal ranges, so this circuit helps restore the tonal balance of the sound. It also balances the level of the channels based on your volume level to make sure you can hear the rear channels better at lower volumes. I think this feature works GREAT and it's something anybody can notice. I think this is a must-have feature. Again Denon is to be commended for offering this feature on all their receivers in 2009
- Dynamic Volume is a useful feature to keep the sound level from blasting you when commercials come on. It's nice for watching TV.
- Denon has better control over video and audio settings. You can adjust the crossover frequency individually for each set of speakers. So if you have large speakers in the front and small satellites in the back, you can customize the bass management individually for each pair of speakers, taking advantage of each speakers' full bandwidth. For some reason many other receivers, Pioneer, Marantz, Yamaha often don't have this per-speaker adjustment. If you use Audyssey to set up your system, the Denon will use this capability to optimize your speakers' bass capabilities.
Also, Denon remembers the VIDEO settings for each input so you can have custom brightness, contrast, color for each input.
- Denon 890/2310 uses the Anchor Bay ABT2010 video processor which is a top grade processor. It does a superb job of scaling and deinterlacing video (Anchor Bay's video processor is well reviewed) probably as good or better than most TVs. It works for both analog sources AND HDMI, converting all your video to the maximum resolution of your TV up to 1080P or any other resolution that is optimal for your set. You do have the option to turn it off and passthrough the signals if you don't see a benefit. For most people, unless you have a top of the line TV, this processor can benefit all your sources
- Many receivers take a long time to resync the HDMI signal when you change inputs. On my previous Onkyo, the screen would blank out for 7-12 seconds when I switched from Cable to DVD. The Denon does it as quick as any I've seen, only 2-3 seconds
- Denon has Graphical User Interface over analog and HDMI connections. So you can adjust the settings while a video signal is being played and you will see the menus overlaid on top (especially useful when you are adjusting video settings). Many other receivers only do GUI overlay for analog connections, but not HDMI. With the Denon 890, you can see Volume Level indicator overlaid over the picture while you are playing back HDMI sources.
- It runs very cool. Many receivers run very hot but this one is good if your ventilation is more limited in your AV cabinet.
- It offers Dolby PLIIz, which allows you to run 7.1 speakers and give you height channels (five speakers in the front). I don't use this feature but it's an improvement over a normal 7.1 setup.
The BAD:
- This model does not have Preamp outputs so you can't add an external amp later if you need more power.
- The manual is hard to understand. Fortunately, there are some great FAQ web pages put up by one guy (search for Denon FAQ)which takes all the mystery out of the settings and adjustments
So, the Denon 890 is a superb product that is leading the pack in this price range. They didn't cripple the product in any way except the lack of preamp outputs.
As far as sound quality, it's debatable whether brand X is better than brand Y, but I can say Denon doesn't make poor performing products in general. Their amps are solid performers that are average to above average in meeting their rated power specifications. Even thought this unit isn't the heaviest chassis, it still packs a punch for its price range.

The new AVR-2310CI was designed for consumers wanting exceptional audio and video performance. Its 7-channel amplifier produces 735-watts of total power (105 per channel), delivering detail and dynamics to music and movie soundtracks. The amplifiers can be configured for 7.1 channel surround sound, or a 5.1 channel system in the 'main" room and power a pair of speakers in a second 'zone". It's equipped with 1080p compatible HDMI 1.3a Repeating technology, delivering both audio and video to your HDTV with single HDMI cable. This HDMI connectivity supports the latest generation surround sound formats available on Blu-ray disc, including Dolby TrueHD and DD+, dts-HD and dts-HR. Also included is Dolby Laboratories new Pro Logic IIz Matrix decoding featuring front height effects channels that expands front soundstage. The AVR2310CI boasts a number of Audyssey technologies. Advanced Audyssey MultEQ analyzes a speaker systems interaction with room acoustics, and then delivers custom tailored correction processing to optimize clarity and tonal balance throughout the listening space. Audyssey Dynamic Volume is an automatic volume-leveling system that tracks audio dynamics to eliminate the irritating volume swings between TV shows and commercials. Audyssey Dynamic EQ is also on board to ensure rich bass and smooth tonal balance at low volume listening levels. In addition to enhanced HDMI 1.3a repeating (5 in, 1 out), the AVR2310CI features 1080p i/p conversion, analog to HDMI upscaling and HDMI to HDMI scaling. Video conversion is accomplished using a premium Anchor Bay Technologies 2010 chip set featuring 10-bit multi-cadence processing. This chip set also provides video noise reduction, picture enhancement, and adjustment capabilities not available on lower priced models. The AVR2310CI also features component video switching (2 in, 1 out), seven analog inputs, and multi-zone (2) / multi-source (2) capability.

Mini Wireless Sensor Bar with Stand for Nintendo Wii Review

I received the product quick, but the product did not work. I immediately emailed customer service after a couple emails. I was instructed they would send me another one. I received the second sensor and again it did not work. I did not have a good experience with this product. Also, the picture looks nothing like the product it is big, bulkly and out dated. It does not look anything like the one that comes with the wii system.

PAC Infrared Remote Repeater for Home Use 40KHZ and 56KHZ - PAC IRXHOME Review

PAC Infrared Remote Repeater for Home Use 40KHZ and 56KHZ - PAC IRXHOME
Average Reviews:

This is what you need to hide your components behind a cabinet door. The IR's stick on with double sided tape--it's easy to find them on your components just by looking or with a flashlight. The little square unit (says "PAC" on it)hides anywhere you want, and the really small sensor at the end of the wire is the only thing that will stick out of the cabinet. I've got mine taped behind my flat screen--you don't even know it's there. This is the least expensive unit I've found, and works like a charm with my Logitech remote.

Defender Digital Wireless DVR Security System with receiver, SD Card Recording and Long Range Night Vision Camera Review

Defender Digital Wireless DVR Security System with receiver, SD Card Recording and Long Range Night Vision Camera
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Defender's Digital Wireless DVR Security System with receiver... etc., etc., if set up properly can and will record any movement within the camera view, day or night. The receiver can be connected to any device that accepts RCA video and audio inputs and it will produce an audible warning/alarm when motion is detected. The receiver can wirelessly control up to 4 cameras (one camera included) and, in turn, can be operated by the provided IR remote control.
I wish I could say 'for sure' that this is a bad product or that it's an Okay thing - the difference between 2 and 3 stars - but I can't. I will settle for 2 stars at this time but I am open to any new facts or corrections that would warrant one extra star.KIT CONTENTS
In the box, you will find the camera, the receiver, power adapters for both, RCA wire with plugs for video and mono audio, an IR extension wire, 4 window stickers announcing that the property is protected and the manual.INSTALLATION AND SETUP
I was disappointed to learn that the only way you can connect to a TV/monitor is over an ANALOG RCA interface - quite unexpected from a product that calls itself 'digital'. Our living room TV has 3 HDMI ports, 2 component video banks and the traditional coax for inputs. NO 'yellow' RCA for Video In. The solution was to go through a receiver and from 'it' to TV's 'component analog video' but I expected better and less complicated.
After that, the rest of the setup was quick and easy. The camera paired with the receiver automatically, the 2GB SD card was inserted into its slot, went through a couple of menus to set preferences and we were up and running.
We haven't mounted the camera on a wall yet but everything needed appears to be there: mounting screws, bracket, even drilling templates.FEATURES
The Defender (I will use this as the short name from now on) is advertised as an advanced, versatile, easy to operate security solution. I will briefly list its most important (to me) features and compare 'advertised' vs. my reality/experience.
- Optimal range of up to 100 ft. between receiver and camera - I placed the right outside the house with the receiver in the living room, easily less than 50 ft. between the two. I was surprised to notice that, even at this short distance the signal's strength will drop to 2 bars and occasionally drop altogether. Moving the receiver a few inches right or left or changing the antenna's position from vertical to horizontal would sometimes get me 3 or 4 bars. As a frame of reference, I have no reception problems whatsoever anywhere in the house or around the house with my DECT cordless phones or with my Wi-Fi. This is at odds with the advertised claim of 100 ft. combined with the claim that the system will intelligently search for and find some unused radio spectrum to use.
- Night vision at up to 40 ft - I am happy to confirm that this is indeed the case. On a moonless night I was able to watch activity (our dogs that is) up to 40-50 ft. from camera's location. It should be noted that the 'infrared' LEDs do have a visible dark red glow so this can't be a stealth night surveillance camera.
- Color camera - I can't tell if this is my receiver's inability to properly translate the one-channel analog RCA feed into 'component video' sent to the TV but what I get on my TV is honest to goodness black and white. This is strange because the recordings captured on the SD card are very much 'color' so either somewhere inside the Defender's own receiver or, possibly, inside my own, the picture turns to B&W. Strange.
- Clear sound and crisp image - No complaints about the microphone. The picture resolution is 640x480 (VGA) by default but you can take it down to 320x240 if you want. To me, the 'hi res' is barely adequate. In addition, the frame rate seems to be something in the range of 10-20 frames per second.
- Coverage - It should be clear that this camera does NOT move (it's fixed in one position) and the only 'zoom' capability is a so-called fixed 2X 'digital zoom' which isn't real any zoom at all because you aren't getting any extra detail.
- Motion detection - Check. It will detect motion up to 100 ft.
- Motion-triggered recording - It works but there seems to be a delay of about one second between the moment motion was detected and the start of the recording. Somewhat annoyingly, the screen goes blank for one second upon motion detection if you happen to watch this 'live'. In addition, if you set your camera to record for 5 seconds following the detection of motion, the recording will stop after 5 seconds while the motion continued. You can set the recording time to 15 or 30 seconds following detection though so this is no such a big deal.
- DVR capability - Indeed, the DS card will have folders named after the date YYMMDD and inside each folders you will have .AVI recordings labeled by 'time' HHMMSS' that can be easily played with MS's Media Player or just about any other app that plays video. You can set it to overwrite the oldest records when full so the 2GB card should get you several days, probably many days of motion activate records.
- Weather resistant - I believe the specs state a temp range from 14F-116F. The temps do drop to and below zero where we live. I hope nothing bad will happen to the camera when this happens. Other than that, it comes with a aluminum cover and, since it tends to run pretty hot, I would expect for ice and snow to melt quickly off it.
- Up to 4 cameras supported - Could not test that but the menus suggest that you could have all 4 camera feeds on one screen at the same time.OPERATION
We set the camera up outside to overlook the driveway and to start recording whenever motion was detected. Once we found a good position for the receiver where it would consistently get at least 2 bars of signal strength, the camera operated well, doing what was expected of it, seeing through the night, detecting and recording motion until... we closed the garage door at which time the receiver could no longer communicate with our camera, located about 50 ft. away, outside. Opening the door would restore communication but we are not planning to keep the garage door permanently open. Raising the camera - me holding it above my head - restored communication while the garage door was closed but this is not a long-term solution. We are still debating what to do with the camera at this time, like maybe mount it somewhere high, possibly on the roof. I can think of a mode of operation where the receiver isn't connected to any display and, if you only interest is to see who came near the house, you simply take out the DS card and watch the daily records independently.
The best use for this camera, if you aren't home during the day, is to be able to see who happened to be around the house in your absence. With 15 seconds of recording per detected motion all it takes is just a few minutes to 'see' the daily activity. I wish we had something like this a couple of months ago when, while we were on vacation, a package left for us in the driveway... disappeared.RATING
+ Good, almost great, DVR functions
+ Relatively simple easy setup
+ Night vision as advertised
+ Motion detection and motion-activated recording as advertised
- Range grossly overstated
- Terrible, antiquated analog interface to TV/monitor
- Low resolution, low frame rate
While this product comes with many good and useful capabilities, the shortcomings are quite serious - so serious, we are not sure we are going to actually 'use' it, now that the testing is done. Considering that this product isn't exactly 'cheap', while I still hesitate between 2 and 3 stars, I feel compelled to award it 2 stars.

These two cameras get a good signal. Easy to setup and use. It works fine for what I need. Good range on the cameras. I get good reception anywhere inside on the receiver. Night vision range is better than expected. The RCA jacks on the receiver makes it easy to record to any analog, PVR, DVR, DVD machine or any other recording devices that you may have that has RCA jacks. I highly recommend this product!

I took a chance and bought this system mainly for the 4 cameras at such a low price. I shouldn't have. The instructions were written by someone very unfamiliar with the English language. Two of the four cameras didn't work. The transmission was supposed to be 330 feet; I was unable to get over 80 feet. The night vision might have been good for 10 feet, and I'm being generous. There was only one review when I bought this system. It was a good review. I think it was written by the manufacturer because no one else since then has had any luck with this product. Don't waste you money on this. I have recently bought the Uniden system and it works like a jewel. Oh, by the way, it cost me $21 bucks to send this junk back. Amazon gave me an expedited refund so I have no complaint with them. But this system is not worth $20, much less over $200.
