Yamaha CDC-697BL 5-Disc Carousel-Type CD Changer Review

Yamaha CDC-697BL 5-Disc Carousel-Type CD Changer

I was surprised how little user information was available on the web about 5 disk carousel changers.
I tried several higher end players (including Rotel, Denon, Sony, Onkyo/Integra and Marantz*) but I couldn't get past the extremely long time it took to switch tracks between disks while in random/shuffle mode (15 to 20 seconds). The 17 year changer I was replacing could change tracks on different disks in 8 to 10 seconds (measured from the end of one song to the start of another on a different disk).
Yamaha got it right with the CDC-697. It matched the track change speed of my 17 year old changer. If you regularly listen to music in random/shuffle mode, this CD changer is the only one out there (in 2008) that can change tracks on different disks within a reasonable time (8-10 seconds vs 15-20 seconds). Nothing else I tried out there that could do that.
Yamaha also seems to have the best version of the disk exchange feature. All the players I tried allow you to change some of the disks while one disk is still playing but the Yamaha is the only one that lets you change 4 of the 5 disks (the fifth is still playing). The others only let you access 2 of the 5 disks to change.
I think Yamaha put more thought into the "changer" aspect of this model.
One other benefit is that the CDC-697 is one of the few CD changers that supports CD text.
I hope this helps others.
* I did not personally test the Marantz CC4001 but I was able to get someone on the DTVforum to check the timing for me.

Garmin GPSMAP 76 Waterproof Handheld GPS Review

Garmin GPSMAP 76 Waterproof Handheld GPS
Average Reviews:

Before my GPS purchase, I considered a number of Magellan units in addition to some in the Garmin E Trex series. I finally decided on the Garmin Map76.
In addition to being relatively easy to use, I preferred the slightly larger screen of the Map76 over the other units. Since I was purchasing the unit to use while sea kayaking, I found the screen on the Map76 was much easier to read in the sunlight than the smaller screens on the E-Trex models. In addition, you can upload map data into this unit. (Although the unit includes a basemap, Garmin also manufactures a number of optional mapping products which cover roads, waterways and topographical features in more detail). For kayaking, I use the optional BlueCharts which is essentially like having Nautical maps at your fingertips. (These are sold by regions and tend to be a bit expensive however).
The tide station/prediction feature on the Map76 was also an important deciding factor. With this unit, you have the ability to get tidal predictions for virtually anywhere in the US at your fingertips.
The Map76 often receives criticism on the low amount of memory for uploading map data. The tradeoff however is that it also drains the battery power at a slower rate than those that boast more memory. (I also considered the GPS Map76S which has an added electronic compass and more memory, however after a trial use from a friend's, I found the Map76S unit to drain battery power far too quickly for my intended use. The Map76S was also about $100 more in cost). Although the Map76S was a slightly upgraded Map76, I didn't feel the extra features of the 76S were worth the added cost, especially with the faster rate of the battery drain.
I've logged over 500 miles of sea kayaking with this unit and am very satisfied with its performance. I find the memory capability in the Map76 is adequate for uploading maps for day trips and the balance with the battery drain is also sufficient.
Although it is waterproof, I highly suggest a transparent waterproof bag for using while kayaking to avoid salt water condensation corroding the battery leads.
Garmin also offers toll free phone and email technical support for their units and software.
This unit makes a great paddling partner.

Sabrent HDMI Extension cable over Cat5/6 RJ45 Extender adapter (Up to 200-Feet) Review

Sabrent HDMI Extension cable over Cat5/6 RJ45 Extender adapter (Up to 200-Feet)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
i installed this with two 50-foot cat 6 cables, and it worked with 1080p@24hz signal -- but produced lots of noisy snow when handling a 1080p@60hz signal.
we only use our setup for watching DVD and BluRay, most films show at 24hz and look great. but any of our DVDs made from television programming, (and even television preview material on film discs) go over the wire at 60hz and come out looking awful.
the hardware is nicely built from metal parts, and can be secured to a wall or surface.
the AC adapter doesn't fit perfectly, leaving a 1/8" gap between the adapter tip and the HDMI receiver (shock hazard if you install this where kids may be exploring ).
since it doesn't fully support 1080p in our environment (at just half of the specified maximum distance for 1080p) i returned this item.

2.4GHz RF Wireless Keyboard with Smart Touchpad Mouse for MCE Media Center Edition Review

2.4GHz RF Wireless Keyboard with Smart Touchpad Mouse for MCE Media Center Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This was a purchase made two weeks ago now that I can't decide if I regret or not. The keyboard does work and works well a good range (10 feet room is not big enough to try farther) from the computer. The media keys work very well, the install was simple and efficient, and the touch pad calculator is bar none awesome.
However, not all the keys work consistently, I have a Logitech S 510 wireless desktop that I have had for two years and it never drops keys as far as I can tell. I do write quite a lot, thousands of pages a year not joking, so I am picky about my key board. I would never hold this item up to the same standard however dropping approximately one key in ten is not acceptable for typing more than a search into Google. There are days that the keyboard works better than others as well, which I just can't figure out.
I have no idea how fast it eats batteries, it still seems to work with the ones it came with two weeks later. Finding "home" on the key board is also rather difficult, for touch type'ers out there, as the razed points on the keys are rather weak all the keys feel the same. However in defense of this key board it is nice and compact feels sturdy and pushes keys together to make the whole contraption more ergonomic.
It also goes to sleep, wakes up with Esc key, which takes getting used to but might be saving batteries which I like.
Final verdict touch pad great, media buttons awesome, calculator key pad absolutely ingenious, and keyboard for "typing" sucks!

Sylvania SYL-WH930GB Wireless Headphones (Black) Review

Sylvania SYL-WH930GB Wireless Headphones (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When you can get these wireless headphones to actually connect, they work fairly well, although they can suddenly disconnect for no reason, and if I turn my head so that it faces my cordless phone base, they get a loud buzz. The sound quality is fine for TV programs. But the main problem is GETTING them to connect: EACH and EVERY time you turn them on you have to "synch" them with the transmitter that's connected to the TV. This involves pressing the "Scan" & "Reset" buttons repeatedly, often for several minutes, before you hear anything other than loud static. This means you need to turn them on & start pushing buttons 4 minutes ahead of time, or you will miss the beginning of things. And don't even think of turning them off during commercials to save battery life! The transmitter requires batteries as well as the headphones, so if you forget to turn IT off when you're done, you'll be out of luck next time. The transmitter DOES have a power jack, but YOU have to find & buy an appropriate power adapter, adding to their cost. Sometimes these allow me to walk into the next room & keep listening, but sometimes they lose the connection while I'm sitting still 4 ft. away. Definitely not worth the trouble!

Saved me from going to the cable company and purchasing one for over forty dollars! My dogs got a hold of the one from the company, did no visible damage to the oustside but must have crushed something on inside. This remote has been dropped, kicked, sat on, Dog licked, and everything in between with our kids and dogs. Knowing it was brand new, and the merchandise being brand new, must make it that more sturdy. The equiptment we had received from cable company was used. This has stood up so far through it all and SAVED so much money on Amazon!!!

URC MasterControl RF20 Universal Learning Remote w/ RF Capability Review

URC MasterControl RF20 Universal Learning Remote w/ RF Capability
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This remote is highly capable but has a bit of a learning curve--after about 4 hours of fiddling around with it and re-reading the manual, I've got a slick little setup that lets me simply push a "Movie" button or a "Game" button and everything turns on and goes to its proper setting. The navigation buttons control the DVD player, the volume buttons control the amp, and when I'm done, I hit Off, and everything turns off. Very cool.
Other than learning to program it (which is not as easy as it could be but thankfully need only be done once), there are only a few, minor gotchas.
- Tip #1: I highly recommend you not bother with pre-programmed device codes and just go straight for "learning mode" instead. The pre-programmed codes generally make on/off and volume work, but anything else (navigation keys on dvd player, source buttons on amp) is pretty sketchy. Save yourself time trying to figure out what works and what doesn't--just program all your keys manually. Also, the process for setting pre-programmed codes ruins all your nicely-renamed soft-keys (see Tip #2).
- Tip #2: Rename your soft-keys before programming them. This will make the learning process more intuitive and you can put all the useful keys on the first page and erase the obscure ones you never use.
- Tip #3: Take advantage of the ability to hide pages--the less random stuff your user has access to, the easier it'll be to use. I even erased the text on the unused keys and set the left over unused device buttons as "dummy macros" which return the user to the first page of the Main menu.
- Tip #4: Why program real devices? I created "virtual devices" as my first two soft-keys and then also tied them to a macro. The first device is labeled "Movie" and is tied to a macro that turns on the DVD player, TV, amp, and sets the amp to the DVD input. Then the remaining keys in my "Movie Device" are programmed for appropriate devices--the navigation keys control the DVD player, but the volume keys control the amp. The second soft-key is likewise labeled "Game" and functions similarly. Lastly, I set an OFF macro to turn everything off and kick you back to the Main menu.
- Tip #5: The remote has a rather poorly-named feature called "punch through" which can help you accomplish this (its really a re-mapping feature which maps buttons from one device into another). It's useful for making things more convenient--you can change the volume on the amp without having to leave the DVD player menu. Just map the Amp's volume controls to the DVD device.
Cons
- The only buttons that can be set to macros are the soft-keys, and the ON/OFF keys when on the main menu. It'd be nice if you could set any key to a macro no matter where you are. For instance, I would rather have used the actual OFF key for an Off macro in my "Movie" device but instead had to make a soft-key be my OFF macro.
- The manual is not too clear but two or three times over the more complicated items (like macros and "punch throughs") and you'll get it.
- Using pre-programmed codes is not very dependable and also blows away any custom labels. Just use learning mode instead.
- You can't hide any of the Main menu pages (there are two pages with 5 devices each for a total of 10 devices--but if you only have 5 devices, it'd be nice to be able to hide the other page).
- This isn't the RF20's fault, but beware that many devices don't have discrete ON and OFF commands--only a toggle. So if you set a macro to turn off three of your devices but one is already off, you may end up turning it on when you turn the other two off.

Logitech Harmony 890 Advanced Universal Remote Control Review

Logitech Harmony 890 Advanced Universal Remote Control
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
UPDATE: I've just upgraded to the Harmony 1000, and talk about fantastic. Nice, easy to read screen and hard buttons, especially if you need glasses to read. Well worth the added price (since the RF receiver isn't bundled with the 1000).
---
3 years ago, I purchased my first Harmony remote, the 768. At the time, I wrote that it was the best universal remote, bar none. I've since purchased a Harmony 668 for another setup, and have recommended various Harmony remotes to my friends. It was now time for me to update my home system.
Based on the numerous reviews, many over a year old, I was hesitant to give the Harmony 890 a try. I'm glad that I did! With the latest Harmony Software and firmware updates (which are automatically installed the first time you connect your devices), my experience has been excellent. And Amazon's price is outstanding - the same that local "discount" chains are selling the non-RF capable model.
I have had no problems configuring both the 890 remote and RF wireless extender under Mac OS X (Intel and PPC) and Windows XP clients. Clearly this is a different experience from the early adopters who bought this a year ago.
Some background - I'm an electronics geek and audiophile. My system is complex, and with more components (12) than the average home setup. In my opinion, if the Harmony can be configured to control all aspects of my environment, then it should handle any configuration as long as you have the patience to work through Harmony's setup wizards and lack of adequate documentation.
Initial setup is easy - install the Harmony software, connect and register, connect your devices (firmware will be automatically updated) and then specify what components you have, and what activities you want them to be in. If that's all you need to configure, there's not much work.
In my instance, I wanted all aspects to be controlled - changing sound modes on the amplifier depending on input source, switching to the optimal input on the TV monitor, controlling all component functions on the remote. This takes some time, and some learning through the sometimes quirky Harmony wizards. But in time, I was successful.
As I've mentioned in my past review of the 768, one of the real differentiators of the Harmony remotes is their ability to intelligently understand the STATE of various devices, and what commands are needed to establish a setting. For example, they will remember if your TV was last ON or OFF, what input it was set to, etc. For some devices, without separate settings for On/Off, or for selecting inputs, this is a lifesaver. And if the remote ever gets out of sync, you can just hit the Help button and it will prompt you through.
The included RF wireless receiver is great capability, allowing you to control devices in separate rooms without a line-of-sight from the remote to the components. However, I would recommend against using the RF receiver at first. Instead, configure the remote for all of your devices using the IR commands. Then, add the RF receiver and change your inputs. (See my separate review of the Logitech Harmony RF receiver for complete details).
Although the screen isn't very large, it is easy to read, providing 8 selections per screen. I prefer the Harmony 890's use of physical buttons to the touchscreen-only approach of other remotes, which force you to look at the screen each time.
Also a nice touch, the Harmony 890 has a motion sensor that will turn on the backlight when you pick up the remote. There areas that could be improved:
> The included documentation is almost useless. Logitech attempts to be user friendly but in the process it ends up being so oversimplified it is of little use.
> Some remote commands (for example, the sound mode settings on my Sony receiver) cannot be learned except in "RAW" mode. This is not the standard Learning mode, and I only found it by searching various online forums.
> The Mac OS X client software can sometimes lose "focus", where it will stop responding to the keyboard (for example, for naming a learned command, renaming an activity, etc). It is easily worked around - just quit and restart the Harmony client software.
> The Harmony client software has a resizeable window, but the actual content doesn't adjust to fit the window size. this is annoying when setting up custom button settings.
> Once you add the RF receiver to your configuration, you must always plug it in and update it, even when you make a minor change that shouldn't affect the RF receiver. I'd recommend placing it (and plugging it to a power source) where it is easy to disconnect/reconnect from your system.
> You can only define 16 favorite channels for a TV activity. This would seem to be an easy change for Logitech (the remote itself is not limited to 2-screenfuls of information).
> The buttons are laid out for appearance not ergonomics. If you have trouble reading without glasses, it may be tough to read the labels on this remote.
Even with these limitations, I still give this a 5-star recommendation, and would recommend it without reservations. Some tips:
1) Make sure you let the Harmony software update the remote AND the wireless RF receiver to the latest firmware
2) Remove the RF receiver from your initial setup, and configure for IR only. Once you're satisfied with all your settings and configurations, then it is simple to add the wireless RF receiver.
3) Configure the RF receiver to send commands to a specific channel (there are 4 different channels with 2 IR emitters on each wire) to minimize interference and improve performance. But, make sure if you do this that you label the IR emitter wires!
4) Harmony now has a Media Center device profile for the AppleTV. The trick is that you need to assign Volume Up to the Direction Up key, Volume Down to the Direction Down key, and Play to the Select key. When you do, the Harmony can control the AppleTV, even with the RF receiver, properly repeating commands to accelerate through the AppleTV menus. The profile is even smart enough to send the PowerOff sequence (hold down Play for 5 seconds).
5) If a learned command doesn't work, click on the "Custom" button at the bottom of the Learn IR screen, and then try to learn the command in "RAW" mode.
6) If you search the internet for "Harmony Remote icons" you can find several sites where people have gone through the work of creating custom icons for the Favorite Channels. This is something that Logitech should provide themselves, but they don't.

RCA RCRP05BR 5 Device Cable Replacement Universal Remote (Black) Review

RCA RCRP05BR 5 Device Cable Replacement Universal Remote (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an exceptionally versatile device but it needs some effort to realize its full potential. It's a JP1.3 class remote, meaning that if you procure the related 6 pin cable (the connector is in the battery compartment) you can program it from your PC. This approach gives you the greatest flexibility though I managed to accomplish everything necessary without the cable using just the keyboard on the remote.
As a JP1 device it will accept Enhanced Function Codes which are not even mentioned in the skimpy instruction sheet. Further, the Volume Punch Through instructions provided by the manufacturer are wrong. The site referenced below will allow you to fix that.
With help from experts on the JP1 remote forum (hi-fi-remote dot com) I was even able to program full functionality for my Insignia NS-BRDVD3 BluRay/Netflix player (not available from Amazon, try BestBuy), something the distributor said was impossible!
I was also able to completely replicate the functions (and more) of the remote which came with my AT&T Uverse DVR (a Motorola VIP1225) using the code finding and then the learning functions. The code for my box is 1998 and is not mentioned in the provided code sheet. The RCA supports all the record/pause/rewind etc. functions of the remote provided by AT&T.
Once you have used the basic four digit device codes to set up your equipment, you can then start entering EFCs to realize full functionality generally missing from the four digit one-device-code approach. Five digit EFCs are frequently available on the JP1 forum or, if not, the experts there will figure them out for you. Once you have them you can confer full input switching on this remote. For example, I use a Sony receiver and MacMini with my Vizio TV and can now switch inputs for both the TV and the receiver using the RCA. In the case of the Insignia BluRay player there is no basic four digit code that works and the learning mode does not work either. The Insignia must be controlled with 5 digit EFCs, available by searching the web. A related advantage is that the RCA has better range and ergonomics than the remote provided by Insignia.
Once you have full EFC codes input the final step is to create macros to automate sequences of steps. While only two keys are labeled 'Macro' on the RCA you can actually assign macros to any key other than the mode keys so the potential here is vast. I have now fully emulated the 'activity based' approach adopted by the far costlier Harmony range of remotes, meaning you can have one button macro programmed for 'Watch TV', another for 'Watch DVD', etc. Additionally, you can create macros to, say, jump directly to TV Favorites, something the Uverse controller does not support.
Drawbacks? Well, it needs some time and effort to learn just what this remote can do. Some of the keys are small and they are not backlit. And as an IR device, your equipment must be line-of-sight for everything to work. Finally, the provided instructions and code sheet barely scratch the surface of what this remote can do and in some instances are simply incorrect.
There are many JP1 class remotes available with like functionality, but you will not begin to to realize their true potential until you invest some time in learning what they can do. From what I have learned most of (maybe all) the One-For-All remote range is JP1 class so you have many alternatives if the ergonomics of this RCA do not work for you. You can recognize a JP1 remote by the presence of a six pin connector.
The two AA alkaline batteries shipped with the remote lasted only 14 days. Mercifully, the programming is stored in non-volatile memory so is retained even when the batteries die. There's no knowing how old these were when the remote arrived here, but I have replaced them with two Lithium AAs which claim a 7x life advantage (at considerably higher cost). I'll report back when I have some data.
The RCA + some effort on your part constitute a wonderful value.
Making it even better - Update:
As our young boy was having difficulty pointing the RCA just so at the various devices, I added a Hot Link Pro Remote Control Booster System. This device is basically a far more sensitive IR receiver which can detect the weakest of signals from the RCA - bounced off walls to its out of sight location works fine - and then routs the received signal to up to six IR components through an optical fiber cable which is attached over the IR receiver in each component. It works exceptionally well and even activates the fussy Insignia NS-BRDVD3 BluRay/Netflix player correctly, so long as you take care to place the Hot Link's sender correctly over the Insignia's receiver. A little experimentation and it's perfect. I use the Hot Link with four devices (TV, Sony receiver, DVD player and AT&T Uverse DVR (Motorola VIP 1225)). I have found you can point the RCA to the wall behind you and it still works! I mounted the Hot Link IR sensor on the back of the TV facing a wall and completely out of sight. This is like having RF functionality in an IR device.

Here's the thing - it's (currently) ten bucks.
Is it going to deliver awesome, noise reducing, bass enhancing virtual surround sound in the space between your ears? No.
Will it fulfill your needs? I guess that depends on what you need it to do.
I wanted something inexpensive that allowed me to watch my movies on TV late at night without disturbing anyone. It achieves that goal but I was disappointed by one drawback for me: although the headset is a stereo receiver (the FM radio reception works surprisingly well for me), the wireless transmitter is not. That's a bit of a problem when I'm watching my movies and I'm considering looking for an alternative.
On the plus side, reception was clear on both the wireless and the FM. I don't have reason to test the other features so I can't offer an opinion on those.
Most people will want to spend a little more and get stereo and that's why I'm giving it only three stars, because the mono is going to be a major drawback for many. If it had stereo, I would have probably given it four stars instead.
Hope this helps :)

Ensure the instructions are in English, I enjoy the aspect of ordering products from other countries but I warn consumers you may wish to ensure the product comes from America not an America company that sells foreign goods in a foreign language. Well it has been about 5 weeks now and many features of this product is unknown to me, the reason is that the entire instructions came written in Chinese. True there is a menu in english, however try to seek selections of the menu and it is written in Chinese. There is a menu for movies, but it is in Chinese. There is a menu for the equilzer, it is in Chinese. The device does play ok but because the fine tuning is in Chinese, I do not know what I am doing. I can not load movies because the instructions are in Chinese. Although the product does state it can do a lot of things that most people are interested in even the instructions were too brief. With everything that the device says it can do there are only 12 lines of instruction. Unless the entire Chinese language is in picture/letters, I would hardly doubt that even if I did speak/read Chinese that the brief instructions would explain the full features of the product. I think I will choose a Sony or other companies that sell their oversees products in a language of the people to whom will use their product. I will keep this until I reorder a different product with instructions in English. Then I will toss it.

I kind of stepped out of my comfort level with this, but for the price, thought I can't go wrong... I mean you get 8 IR transmitter bulbs and comes with everything you need to control your devices that are hidden behind a cabinet. I have purchased several other more expensive repeaters, this works just as good. My only caution is that unlike some other repeaters, the receiver part is hard-wired and is only 1 meter long. Based on some other descriptions, I thought I could just buy an extension but this is not the case since its hard-wired. For a lot of installations this would be ok because the 4 dual emmitter bulbs are fairly long (three at 2 meters, and one at 4 meters long).
For my installation, the equipment is in a closet, so I needed to extend the receiver by about 12 feet by using my almost non-existent soldering skills. I just cut the receiver wire, and soldered in an extension. Obviously, test your equipment before you start cutting any wires!!
I control a HD Cable Box, Blue Ray Player, HDMI switcher, and Onkyo Receiver.... (with room to grow) without any issues. It just works. I expect this to work for a long time since there are very few components to fail. This replaces a nextgen repeater which I really liked, but became too unreliable over time.
I called Sewell tech support before I purchased. They told me it works exactly the same as the larger units and has a dual frequency receiver, so it should work with newer devices as well.

I got these so I could watch TV at night without disturbing others in the house. The sound quality is fantastic. Great dynamic range and clear sound. I will get a second pair for the other TV in the house.
I have not used them for pure audio. I have high end audio equipment and prefer the imaging that speakers provide. Headsets don't produce the sound stage well.

DO NOT ORDER THIS PRODUCT!!!
Ordered this product the first time and they sent me a different product. Usually no big deal with amazon because they pretty amazing at fixing any issues. Contacted them via online chat to fix the problem, they said they couldn't replace the item because it was warehoused by GSI so they didn't know what the stock was like. They told me to send it in and then re-order the item. They even put a note on my new order to make sure the warehouse checked the item before shipping it.
Second item on the way, was going good. Received second item and it was the exact same incorrect item that I received the first time. Called amazon this time and spoke with one of the operators. She assured me that they would have the warehouse personnel check their stock. I asked for a replacement item and they gave me the same story about not having control over the warehouse and that I would have to re-order the item. When I asked them how they were having the warehouse personnel check the items and confirming that it was being done properly since evidently it hadn't gotten done properly the last time. They had no answer for that. Finally hung up on them.
Was very disappointed when ordering this product. Like it says in my title GSI + AMAZON = INCOMPETENT. If you order this, do not expect to receive the correct product!
